Fix Custom Field Value Editing

Overview

Custom fields in Wrike help teams store and manage information specific to your work across tasks, projects, and folders. The ability to edit custom field values depends on several factors including your user license, assigned access role and the custom field settings.

Important

Before troubleshooting, try accessing your Wrike account in a different browser or in a new incognito window. If everything works as expected in these environments, it may indicate that clearing your cache and cookies could resolve the issue. You can find instructions on clearing cache and cookies here.

Situation

You're trying to update the values in a custom field, but for some reason, you're unable to edit them.

To understand why this is happening, check if you're able to edit other custom fields in different locations and follow the troubleshooting instructions below that match your case.

All custom fields are not editable

License type limitation

You may not be able to edit custom field values due to your user license. Please note that CollaboratorsContributors and Viewers don't have this permission.

If you can see the license type at the bottom of the left sidebar (Collaborators are used as an example), you can request a license upgrade to gain editing rights in the account:

  1. Click Get Access in the sidebar.
  2. In the popup window, click Request access to submit.
  3. Wait for the response from your account owner/admins.

Owner or admins with relevant permissions may disable update requests for the team. When this setting is turned off, limited license users will not see their license type in the sidebar. In this case, click on your profile picture in the sidebar in the upper-left corner of the workspace to find your license type right below your name. Then reach out to your account owner/admin directly in Wrike or through any other communication system your company uses and ask them to upgrade your license to a regular or external user.

Access role limitation

Your assigned access role may lack permissions to edit custom field values. "Edit task custom field values" and "Edit folder/project custom field values" rights are required depending on the item type you need to edit. Contact your account admin to request the necessary permissions. For Pinnacle and Apex accounts, an admin with sufficient permissions can also customize the permissions for roles and can create new roles.

Specific custom fields are not editable

Custom field settings limitation

You may have "View" access to the affected fields. Ask your account admin to update your user permissions in the custom field settings.

Item type settings limitation

If you can't edit a custom field value for a specific item type (for example, you can change values in projects and project-based custom item types, but not folders, tasks, or task-based custom item types), check the custom field settings and update the "Applied to" setting. This can be done in several views, including the Table view:

  1. Switch to the Table view.
  2. Find the custom field column and click on the three‑dot menu in the header.
  3. Click on Change field settings.
  4. In Applies to dropdown select the required item types.
