[Status: Launched! ๐] Enable Sorting of Tasks inside Table View by Priority
Problem:
I want to view a prioritized list of tasks in an information dense view, including all custom fields and tags/foldersย so I have a snapshot of all the tasks my team has to work on.ย
Current State:
We use the list view, drag-and-dropping tasks,ย to create a prioritize queue of work. The problem with the list view is that it is not information dense - many fields are hidden, and only ~10 tasks fit on the screen at once. As a result, it's difficult to complete prioritization
The table view however, isย very information dense, and I love it. It's a much better way to see a lot of data, however you can't sort it by priority. There is no perfect view where I can see a prioritized list along with all of the relevant data.
Potential Solution
Enable sorting of the table view by priority
Joshua, thank you for posting! I love the way you structuredย this idea, and I can definitely understand how this would help view relevant data. Our Product Team plans to work on some enhancements toย the Table View, and your post is very helpful for learning about different use cases and requirements.ย
It would also be very helpful if the importance of a task was shown in the table view. As mentioned the table view is information rich but why having the option to mark a task as being important and not showing it in the table view?
Bump, I like to use a table view when presenting for others, but there isn't a good way to order the task as it doesn't use priority. Order by start date seems to be the best option, but doesn't work very well if task have the same start date. So every time I export as excel I still end up editing output. So far I've found that almost anything I do outside of the web portal requires some sort of editing, some of it time consuming. I'm guessing the reporting available in the other paid options would help with this, but I don't really wan't to spend $30 a month as I am the sole user of the application. I also don't want to spend the $30 a month if reporting seems to be missing the same basic functions ie.. sorting by priority in one view but not in another.ย
Tim, thank you for sharing your feedback about this, I understand that this functionality is important to you and your team. While this isn't on our current roadmap, our Product Team is internally discussing improvements to the Table View, and your comment is really helpful. Sorting by priority isn't available in any Table charts, but I can see the value in this and I'll make sure to point others here to support the idea.
Would be of great help to us, too.
Thanks for voting for this, Marcus! :)
Voting for this update as well! With multiple people assigned to a number of projects cross functionally its imperative to have a prioritized view that is information dense. Really hope this is on the Product Roadmap to integrate soon! Thanks!
I'm adding my vote to this. My managers don't like looking at Gantt charts, and really need to see a clear table layout, with as much information and flexibility as possible.
Thanks.
I can't seem to edit my comment, so need to add to the above.
The table view is far and away the clearest way to view information.
But it would be awesome to have this flexibility within the table view:

Hi Antonia! I'm glad you added that second comment, I was going to ask if any of the other views could be more convenient. :) That bulleted list helps us know exactly the type of functionality you'd be interested in, thanks for providing that. Also, I wanted to bring up two recent releases which I think might be interesting:
Let me know if you have any questions!
This one is REALLY critical for us. When we prioritize stories into our development queue, we take into account their "User Value", "Job size" and other custom fields that we've created. So being able to see those custom fields in a table format is absolutely critical when prioritizing.ย
Hi Jonathan,ย I just want to clarify - are you currently able to see your Custom Fields when you're looking on the Table View? I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but wanted to offer a potential workaround:
Once a Custom Field is added you can sort the column by "ascending" or "descending". Even though there isn't drag and drop within the view, one option might be to create a priority Custom Field (this would be a dropdown option with a set number of priority options to choose from). You would then assign each task a priority using this field, and then use the sort ascending/descending option to organize the tasks based on that Custom Field.ย
This sorting feature to list tasks by order of entry would be a huge help for me. I understand I can add numbers before the task itself but if I were to add a new task somewhere in the middle I would have to re-number everything after the new task is added. This is burdensome.
When I enter a tasks in a new project I feel like I need to work backwards since my first task entries are currently being pushed to the bottom of the list. Please fix this. Thanks.
This is critical for our use of the tool as well. ย I have recently recruited a number of teams onto Wrike. ย After getting all of their tasks are imported from Sharepoint, they realized that it's hard to see what's important to them. ย Agree with the above that the table view is the most data dense and therefore the most useful view. ย Perhaps this table will highlight some of the issues, even with custom fields:

Hi Rosella and Melanie, thank you for sharing your thoughts here! @Melanie, I love the way you structured this table, it's really helpful to get an overview like that. Just to clarify the third point about sorting by Custom Fields in Table View: do you mean that the values don't sort in ascending/descending order?
I'll chime in and answer for Melanie. I've got a custom field called "Priority" where projects are assigned a priority rank 1 through N. When I click sort Ascending/Descending the view does not change. It appears as though the functionality exists, but it just doesn't work as expected.ย
@Corey, thank you for clarifying! I'm going to open up Support tickets for you and @Melanie so our team could take a closer look at this behavior. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!
I'd like to also echo the need for the Table view to sort by Priority.ย There just needs to be a way to have the drag-and-dropped tasks in the List view to appear sorted exactly the same way in the Table view.ย I have a long list of tasks in exactly the order I want in the List view, and I would love to be able to view them in the more compact Table view--but then they get all out of order and appear alphabetically (which is not helpful at all).ย Adding this feature would be EXTREMELY helpful!
I think also we need permanent ย (not just in that view) ย sort by due date option which will be very helpfull
I also need priority on table view. ย Please :)
ย
I'd like to see all sorting options that are available in List to be available in Table view. ย And the ability to select a "default" so you don't need to select your preferred sort every time you go into the Table view.
ย
ditto - and being able to just drag to re order tasks in the table view would (like in the list function) would be good
ย
yes, drag to reorder tasks in table view would be great.ย ย
ย
All of this^^^ Especially Priority view on Table.
Agreeย that sorting of the table view by priority is a critical feature.ย ย
Hi!
I was wondering if there has been any progress on this enhancement request and to "bump" it as well.ย It is very cumbersome to have to renumber/letter tasks/projects/folders in order to view them in a particular order in the Table View.ย I agree that the Table View is the best view, by far, for upper management but not being able to easily control in what order/priority the tasks/folders/projects fall in is big downfall.
We are looking for the ability to choose if you sort with numerical tasks before alphabetical tasks or the ability to control which tasks are listed first.ย ย We also want to clarify that when we get the ability to change the sequence, we would like to have the ability to keep it in that particular sequence.
ย
Thank you for all your hard work! ๐
Hi guys, our team are interested in adding sorting options in the Table view. It's early days in the discussions so it's not on their roadmap yet so no specificย details to share right now. Please continue to add use-cases where possible and of course vote on the original post ๐
This really needs to be added to the roadmap.ย Considering going back to MS Project/SharePoint because becasue of this limitation.
Hi Debbie, thanksย for posting. I understand the need for this feature and we have made sure the Product Team reference this thread during these discussions. These discussions are standard in the process of adding a new feature to a roadmap ensuring the functionality meets the expectations and needs.
I'll be back here once I have a more solid update to share in terms of expected dates ๐
Vote added.
Visualizing by priority in every view except Table seems like an oversight. This is really needed.
Thanks !
