[Status: Coming Soon...๐Ÿ•‘] Allow Subtasks to Update Start and End Dates of Parent Tasks

I think this is somewhere else in the community, but when I posted something else as a suggestion in the regular community area, I was asked to place my suggestion (Dependencies in the Table View) here in the Product Feedback section.

ย

It would be helpful to have a setting to allow subtasks to drive the dates for the parent tasks. ย Right now it's manual. ย There are some who prefer it that way, and some who do not, so it would be nice to be able to set that on a per-project basis.

I know wrike already does that... kind of.

ย

If you complete a task, but it has subtasks that are still active, a SMALL popup appears for a time, asking if you want to apply it to the subtasks too.ย ย

ย

I think it should be more prominent like in your screenshot.

Sam, thanks for pointing that out!ย  I tried it and sure enough I got this:

I think ClickUp's got some more sophistication and functionality in their version, but good that we have something here in Wrike.

By the way, I think the "floating box" is way underused in Wrike, I have another feature request about that here:

https://help.wrike.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360033090674-More-implemenatio-of-the-floating-box-when-activity-takes-place-in-Wrike-like-task-creation

I frequently create tasks and would like to see what happened to them, but they are hard to track down at times.ย  For example, I don't always seem to be able to easily find in "recent" in the search box what I just created.

Finally, I actually responded to you with much more detail earlier but the post is showing as "pending approval" still - wonder if I used some term the bots flagged up?ย  Hopefully it will release to the thread soon!

Thanks for this tip, cheers!

What's the status on this?ย  I've read thru this entire thread and still don't see a valid solution.ย ย This is the most basic of project schedulingย fundamentals and I amย dumbfounded as to why Wrike wouldn't assume thisย to be a core function from the very beginning.ย  Here's my take and temp workaround...ย

Take the example below (Imported from MS Project), where the summary tasks dates do not align with the sub-tasks:

If one changes the dependent predecessor of the summary to 108FS to match the first sub-task, then the summary magicallyย updates:

But, if one updates the duration of the first sub-task from 5d to 10d, the summary does not update (Yes I've read about task alignments, but task alignments only extends summary tasks to encompass sub-tasks...Does not pull in start dates).

The only workaround I've found is to delete the dates of a summary task entirely.ย  Then sub-tasks update the summary automatically (but only graphically)....

Dates deleted...

Sub-task updated and summary updates on the Gantt chart.

Issues with approach are pretty obvious in reporting and managing projects.ย  My two cents.

This thread was started 2.5 years ago. Is Wrike planning to release this feature? I agree with others as a former MS Project user that parent task aligning with its sub-tasks' duration is a basic project management tool feature, and extremely helpful when viewing a summarized version of the task list (i.e. parent tasks only).

Adding a vote for this very needed feature.

I am on my trial period for Wrike to replace our PM system and I have to say I was falling in love with the tool until I struggled for hours to try to get the Parent task to reflect the soonest start date of the subtasks and the latest end date of the subtasks. I gave it a good deal of time trying to use dependencies to reflect these dates, but then it breaks quickly when the subtasks dates change.

Please make this happen!

Hi everyone! This is the second most popular suggestion on our Product Feedback forum, so thank you all for keeping this going! Our Product team has recently released a related improvement in the Table View which allows to rollup dates on the project level. And the team continues to investigate and plan to add dates' rollup for tasks/subtasks. Hopefully, I'll be able to share more details in Q1 2020.ย

A huge thanks to all of you for the feedback!ย

Talk about frustration.....this function/feature has been requested for over 2 years.ย  ย Wrike promotes it's Gantt Chart as a viable project management tool, but without roll up to parent tasks or project, then what's the point?ย  ย C'mon.....you guys have got to get this function implemented.

Welcome to the Community, Terry Howat! As I mentioned above, dates roll-up is now available in the Table View - Wrike automatically checks the start and end dates of all subprojects, tasks, and subtasks within the project and sets the earliest start date and the latest end date for the project. Here's more info: https://help.wrike.com/hc/en-us/articles/209603489-Projects#rollup

As for Gantt Chart, you can roll-up dates there as well: ย when you roll-up dates

  • Start date: the earliest date that an item within it starts
  • Due date: the latest date that an item within it ends

Here are the details: https://help.wrike.com/hc/en-us/articles/360009420853-Roll-Up-Dates-on-the-Gantt-Chart-

Hope this is helpful!ย

Hi Terry Howat, hope you don't mind me jumping in for Lisa here.

Yes, you can use roll-up in Blueprints! You can use it in projects created from Blueprints as well, it works the same as for any other project in the Workspace.

Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me knowย ๐Ÿ˜Š

Want to add a big +1 as even though this works, thankfully, with projects, with the flexibility you can get in Wrike setting up varying relations around entities you use tasks for, this is really needed in the task/subtask level, too. ย Otherwise you have to basically give up using subtasks fluidly if you want to keep this all working without manual labor. ย Real shame you guys can't get this done. ย Other tools are dragging - it's a huge request of up-and-coming ClickUp, and you guys have a chance to stay ahead if you can make this happen.

+1 for me.ย  I find it hard to believe the amount of time this request/issue has been open.ย  I just tried this and only the highest level task get rolled up, not any of the subtasks.

I would like to make a couple of points.ย  In my mind, full rollup functionality is critical.ย  With a long background in development, I do not understand how this can be taking so long to implement.ย  If people are forced to set child task dates and then manually calculate the rollup, then errors can result.ย  If you want to adjust a single date embedded several layers deep, then extra effort is needed to adjust all the impacted dates.ย  If rollups worked as expected, simply updating the date would be all that would need to be done - very simple.

One other comment. I know that I will need additional sets of dates (start, finish, duration).ย  It would be nice of be able to apply the rollup capability to custom date fields.ย  An example of a set of dates that will be needed are actual start, end, and duration.

I saw this is a much desired functionality, and i fully agree with it.

If not a guaranteed date, may we have a genertal idea about when this will be made available?

ย

Thanks a lot.

I did read thru some of the notes and want to confirm my understanding.ย  The sequence of steps is to:

1. Rollup the start date (which is the minimum function)

2. Rollup the duration (which is the maximum function)

3. Calculate the duration (based on the rolled up start and duration dates)

A quick question - will the parent status be rolled up?ย  I think the logic should be to update the parent status to the least advanced status of the child tasks. That may be somewhat difficult since the status can have status tracked in different ways.ย  At a minimum, maybe just restrict the updating of parent status to completed if all it's child tasks have a status of completed.

My earlier comment/question from April 27 is still important.ย  This rollup functionality is for the system dates.ย  Can this rollup feature also be applied to custom fields/dates?ย  For our projects, we also need to track actual dates.ย  Rolling up on the actual dates would be very useful.

Looking for an update on this subject.ย  Has this feature been rolled out yet? Looking to use Wrike, but this features seems to be a missing necessary component... what is ETA for release?
