How to

Users who have Full or Editor access roles can convert tasks to task-based Custom item types and projects to project-based ones.

  • Using mass editing

That was really necessary to use custom types. Thanks.

I'm missing the update of the workflow and rules after the convert. The workflow is still the default and the rules are ignored.

Will this be talked about at Wrike Collaborate during the Custom Item Types session?

Thanks for this, very well received. It would make more sense to me if the right click action was in the left side folder tree rather than in list view, but perhaps that's just me?

This will help a lot the transition to the new type of itens <3

Lisa what Wrike recomends for the old task type? Is there a way to hide it system wide? Or to make it as a new type of item? (Hope I could explain it right haha)

Melynda Willis There'll be a session on CITs - please check it out here "Get exCITed about Custom Item Types!" 👍

Mark Tucknutt I've shared your feedback with the team anyway 🙂

Neyl Walecki No spoilers, but you will soon have more control over the types of items in your account 🤗

Lisa - As best I can tell, the API doesn't yet support the ability to change the item type. Is this by any chance available but not yet documented? If not, any ETA on when the API will support this capability?

Hey Laura Boylan, I don't have an update on changing item types via API at the moment, but we'll keep you posted 👍

Lisa - Any updates on the ability to change the item type either by API or by built-in automation rules?

Hi Laura Boylan, thank you for coming back to this thread. I'm afraid that we don't have updates to share about this option, but as Lisa mentioned, we will keep you informed about any changes 👍

Thank you!

It would be very useful to be able to use automation rules to change the item type to a specific custom type - like when a task is moved to a specific folder or a particular custom field value is selected.

I would also like to see automation able to change a custom item type - this would be extremely helpful in ITSM models as items flow through different centers of excellence.

chiming in, having the ability to change an existing task item type via the API or automation would be very helpful!

Both the Tasks and Folders & Projects api endpoints takes the option "convertToCustomItemType" which can be used to change a task, folder or project into a custom item type.

Tasks
curl -g -X PUT -H 'Authorization: bearer  eyJ...xU' -d 'priorityAfter=IEAODVENKQAB5BJB&addShareds=["KUAAAAAX"]&importance=Low&customFields=[{"id":"IEAODVENJUAAAAAW"},{"id":"IEAODVENJUAAAAAX","value":"testValue"},{"id":"IEAODVENJUAAAAA3","value":"[\"RE12\"]"}]&description=New description&convertToCustomItemType=IEAODVENPIAAAAAJ&dates={"start":"2025-01-09","due":"2025-01-12"}&title=New title&withInvitations=true&removeSuperTasks=["IEAODVENKQAB5BJB"]&addResponsibles=["KUAAAAAX"]&addFollowers=["KUAAAAAX"]&addParents=["IEAODVENI4AB5BIO"]&status=Deferred' 'https://www.wrike.com/api/v4/tasks/IEAODVENKQAB5BJD'

Folders & Projects
curl -g -X PUT -H 'Authorization: bearer eyJ...vxU' -d 'metadata=[{"key":"testMetaKey","value":"testMetaValue"}]&addShareds=["KUAAAAAY","KUAAAAAX"]&customFields=[{"id":"IEAODVENJUAAAAAW","value":"testValue"}]&description=New description&convertToCustomItemType=IEAODVENPIAAAAAK&project={"ownersAdd":["KUAAAAAX"],"ownersRemove":["KUAAAAAY"],"startDate":"2025-01-09","endDate":"2025-01-16"}&addParents=["IEAODVENI7777777"]&title=New title&withInvitations=true' 'https://www.wrike.com/api/v4/folders/IEAODVENI4AB5BIN'

There seems to be no official update that this is possible and there is as usual no real documentation of how it works.

Changing anything back to a *non* custom item type does not seem to work, as there is no known identifier that I can find for the normal Folder, Project or Task types.

If anyone figures out what the proper way to convert a custom item type back to a normal one, please write that here.
I.e. how to use the API to change a customItemTyped folder into a basic Wrike folder again.

Not possible to do according to the Wrike Support =(

Riia with Wrike Support answers:
Indeed, converting Custom items back to regular folder/project/task is not yet supported via Wrike API.
