Prioritizing a Project

Hello everyone.  I'm looking for suggestions on how to prioritize a project.  I have several different departments reporting to me, each having a large number of associated projects.  I would like to be able to go in and set priority levels for each project.  This will allow the supervisors for those areas know what projects they need to focus on.  Any thoughts?

Hi Jeff, nice to have you here! One option would be to create a dropdown type Custom Field called "Priority" and apply it at the Project/Folder level. You could then have the dropdown options be priority levels (low, medium, high aka Death Star approaching).

After that, I would create a Report based on the Projects whose priority you want to track and share the report with all of the appropriate supervisors. Just make sure that you include the priority Custom Field in your Report. To do this: click "Add more filters" on the Filters panel when you're creating/editing the report. Let me know if that works for you or if you want a more step by step guide to creating the report.

Jeff, I agree.

It should be a built in option to prioritize your projects, not a workaround wich I think making a custom field is. I would like an easy way to see wich ones that are more important (with colors or something like it) and I should be able to set the priority for each project.

@Andre Hello! You are able to color-code Folders and Projects and can definitely use those to create a system for prioritizing projects. I would love to hear if that works for your team.

It would be very valuable to set priority of Projects (within a given Folder/Project) by dragging and dropping to the desired order, the same way Tasks may be prioritized.

Projects and Folder in your Folder tree are listed in alphanumerically. So you can change the Project's titles to 1, 2, 3 to order them the way you wish. Let me know if that helps for now 👍

Thank you for your suggestion Stephen.  Yes, using a numbering prefix is an age old trick, something we used to have to do in the 90s and early 00s because systems were much more rudimentary back then.  We would actually do this in increments of 10s or even 100s so that there was room to add other projects in between after the original list was defined.  However, almost 30 yrs later we should be a little more sophisticated than this.  Wrike is a pretty awesome and sophisticated product, so I'm surprised this dynamic prioritization feature, of which Wrike already has for Tasks, was not part of the design from the start.  Hopefully enough folks will comment on this to get it in the enhancement queue.

Fair point Theodore, I totally understand. The suggestion for priorities on Projects makes perfect sense and it's something I'd like to see developed too. The Product Team is aware of this feedback post from Catherine which is very similiar. It would be great to get your vote there if you haven't already voted, or even a use-case by commenting there.

I agree with everyone on here we have spent way to much time trying to get creative to figure out work arounds because we can set priorities to projects.  This needs to be something at the top of Wrikes list to include in an update.  I should be able to click on a tab or something or drag underneath a previous project so that my team knows this is the order of what needs to get accomplished.

Custom fields is also not even available on Professional plan and you need Business to do it! This is very cheeky move from Wrike. Maybe check what Asana has to offer ;)

Hey everyone! It's also possible to create folders for priorities (like Red, Orange and Green, for example), color-code those folders and use them as tags for your projects. Hope this can be helpful - please let me know!

Hi Lisa. This is another work around and it's not ideal for a project management tool not to have prioritization as a standard feature. It need to be a feature in a standard plan.
