[Status: Not planned] Improve how Recurring tasks work
Greetings!
I must confess that of all the many, awesome features in Wrike, recurring tasks is probably the one I'm most underwhelmed by. One of the tools that we came from was Asana, which falls short in so many ways, but handles recurring tasks very well.
I was bummed the first time I created a recurring task and found that Wrike simply created a task for every single instance. There's one task that we do every month, for example, for the foreseeable future. First, I realized I couldn't simply have it recur indefinitely. Then, after setting it to 5 years, I realized I'd created this monster list which ate all the other tasks, visually.
I understand this would likely require back-end changes, but please consider changing how recurring tasks work. Here's a couple thoughts:
- Make it a single task marked as a recurring task (bringing things like description and comments to a single place)
- Allow for a task to recur indefinitely. Since it's just a single task, no problem!
- Instead of a task being daily or weekly or monthly or yearly, allow a user to define multiple recurrence rules, providing the flexibility for more bizarre schedules
Being a task attribute, I believe it would also lend itself to open support for recurring subtasks as well.
Hope this helps! :)
Asleep at the wheel?
Hi folks, a quick update here to say that there have been no changes and that this suggestion remains 'Not Planned'.
I understand that this may come as disappointing news, but please be assured that we will continue to pass on your feedback to our Product team. If anything changes, we'll be sure to let you know.

This appears to be a dead-end post... improvements that are requested elsewhere going several years back get closed out by officials saying that the improvement has been added to this post. So community moderators are "closing out" posts that aren't resolved and moving them to one post which is never resolved. That's a really interesting way to make the community feel "heard" without actually doing anything about it. I suggest that Wrike shut down this whole community and save themselves some money and just create an email where people can send suggestions and requests and they can just auto-forward them to the trashcan. hunting down info on this only to find it in a dead-end community post is extremely frustrating.
that being said... if someone out there is actually interested in making improvements or helping I would like to reiterate a post from 3 years ago asking how to make recurring tasks include subtasks and requesting the feature be added.

Hi Lisa
I'd like to participate as well since we've missed a few things due to how recurring tasks currently work.
Of course, thank you for reaching out, Joshua Balentine 🙂

i would be happy to interview for this , this feature has so much to be desired for , what about custom fields ? why do those not transfer over? and a recurring task doesn't transfer with all the subtask? sounds a bit useless of a feature.
Thank you for your interest, Sam Goldstein! Our team is made aware of these asks (custom fields and subtasks), thank you for mentioning this!
Welcome to the Community! 🙂

I would like to be included in the beta as well! This request was made in 2017 and I would love to see it completed faster than the vaccine rollout
So does this mean that the comment about this not being prioritized was incorrect?
Hi Evan Rakowski, Scott Harris The team has completed the research and recurring tasks' improvements are on hold for now. We'll make sure to let you know when we have updates on this one in the future. I'm sorry for the confusion this may have brought!

I need to understand when/if this is going to change. It is creating larger issues for us, and if this is not going to be fixed we are probably going to have to find a different solution. This is basic functionality, that I and many others have been asking for, for several years.
Others (Mark Tuggle, Ella Flansburg, Evan Rakowski), were you all under the same understanding that this was going to be fixed?
I am with you, Scott. This is news - and VERY DISAPPOINTING NEWS at that. Lisa, why would the team member with whom I spoke assure me this problem would be fixed - at least within Blueprints - before the end of Q1? Now not only is a major functionality continuing to go unfixed, you have a serious integrity breach on your hands. How can we continue to work with and recommend (which I have done as a Wrike Ambassador) your company and product when I have been lied to by your team?

This is most disappointing, as this is a feature we could really use in our work processes. I hope you keep it high on the priority list.
Elaine,
Thanks for the response. This is the first time that I have heard there are "technical obstacles" and statements like "once it becomes possible". Given Wrike knows how important this functionality is, and how many people are asking for it. The vague, but all to familiar "will keep recurring tasks improvements on their radar... We’ll keep you posted on any news of this as soon as we have it" is concerning. As a former software developer, that sound like a soft way of saying for we cannot do this the way the software is currently designed and it would require a complete redesign, so we are going to kick the can down the street.
I cannot imagine that a software company does not have a multi-year roadmap. My request is that the team just be forthright. Is it going to be completed? When? If the answers are no and never, or yes but not within 2 years, I would hope that would be communicated.
Sorry for my bluntness; my team really likes and depends on Wrike, but is really frustrated at the absence of this functionality.
I can't say it any better than Scott Harris just did. He's right - and Wrike owes us the truth. I suspect that if you aren't going to work on it now, you are basically never going to work on it. I am deeply disappointed in this news.
Hi folks, thanks for your responses here.
There are no plans to roll this out this year, unfortunately. We will, however, be reviewing the possibility of adding this functionality again in 2022 and we'll let you know if there are any plans for this then. As I mentioned previously, the team is aware of how popular and requested the addition of this functionality is, and even though we are not in a position to work on this at this time, we will be keeping it in mind for future updates.
Again, we're sorry for the disappointment caused here. If there's anything else we can help with, please do let us know.

I cannot upvote this enough. This is a massive inconvenience and source of INEFFICIENCY for me, my team, and projects. Please fix this.
Thanks for the reminder, Haley. Wrike, pretty please, fix this.
Spoke with Account Rep yesterday. This is still not on any existing roadmaps. Disappointing.
