Automated parent task status updates

It would be awesome if the Wrike developers could add the following functionality. I would love to see a parent task status be able to be automatically updated by completing specific subtasks beneath the parent task. For instance if I have a parent task with 8 subtasks it would be great if completing tasks 1 and or 2 would cause the parent status to change from "Backlogged" to "In Progress" Completing steps 3 and or 4 would cause the parent task to change from "In Progress" to "Phase 2" Completing steps 5 and or 6 would cause the parent task to change from "Phase 2" to "Phase 3" and finally completing step 7 & 8 would cause the parent task to change from "Phase 3" to "Complete"

Yes.  This would prevent a lot of the work Wrike creates by forcing you to constantly update status.  The name of the game is automation and Wrike has a surprisingly low level of items that are automized

This feature would be helpful for our team as well. It's tedious to change the status in the subtask then go up one level to change the parent task as well. It would be ideal if we could choose which subtask to link the status to since we usually have at least 2 or 3 subtasks.

This would be great for my team as well. I wish I could create a rule in which a task would be automatically assigned when the dependent task is closed out. It would save me a lot of time and manual effort.

I would be fine if the parent task would just update to complete when all the sub tasks are completed. But I can see how this functionality would be very useful.

Hey everyone, a quick update here;

The Product team is currently working on functionality that would allow for parent tasks to change status once all subtasks have reached a certain status. While they are interested in allowing parent tasks to change once a certain amount of these subtasks have satisfied these requirements, there are currently no plans to add this suggestion to the short term roadmap. If anything changes. I'll be sure to keep you posted.

If you have any questions, feel free to let me know.

Hi Lisa - I don't seem to have access to the link you posted about automation. I'm interested in having parent task status automatically being updated to complete if all the subtasks are marked as complete. Has that functionality been built? And if so, where can I find information about how to set that up? Thanks!

Hello Andrew Dwyer, welcome to the Community, and hope you don't mind me jumping in for Lisa.

Yes with Automation Engine you can create a rule that will change the parent task status to complete if all the subtasks are changed to complete.

Please let me know if this helps 🙋🏻‍♀️

Lisa I'm surprised that this is not a basic feature. Sub tasks generally follow the schedule of the parent task. It's cumbersome to have to manually adjust every parent task for tiny changes we have to do with subtasks.

Thanks for reaching out here AH! Can Wrike's Automation Engine help as my colleague Cansu explained above?

Hi there,

I am also in a situation where this automation would come in handy and eliminate unnecessary steps. From what i have found and from what Cansu has explained, it appears that a parent task can only be automated to change it's status once ALL subtasks are marked as completed, not just individual ones.

This specific automation is beneficial when you have multiple status changes for a parent task. At the moment if you want to complete a single sub task and then change status of parent task accordingly you have to do so manually, which just seems like an extra step to keep track of.

Examples of application below:

-When sub task "product ordered" has been marked as complete then the parent task status will change to "ordered"

-When sub task "order dispatched" on same card has been marked as complete then the parent task status will change to "in transit"

-When sub task "order received" on same card has been marked as complete then all other subtasks are now complete and parent task status will change to "order complete"

I have been told there may be a way to do this using API or Integrate - is there any quick tutorial floating around somwhere that explains this method?

Cheers!
