[Status: Backburner ⏳] Adding Progress Bar in Tasks

Hi,
I'm Kris Antoni from Toge Productions Pte. Ltd., a video game development studio based in Indonesia. My company has been using Wrike for project management and planning for over a year. We are also using Wrike as an OKR (Objectives and Key Results) tracking system.

It would be great if there's a Progress Bar feature in each Task so that teams or individuals can share and track progress on tasks. Just a simple bar with 0 to 100% where users can update and have it visible on the List, Table, and Timeline views.

This can be beneficial for tracking production as well. For example there's a task "Produce 100 boxes", the team can update/track how many boxes has been produced easily.

Here's a mockup of the Progress Bar

Another vote for the progress % bar for tasks (and have them be an option in determining how the Project Progress rollup is calculated) Right now the Project Progress rollup feature is just not accurate (no matter what setting I use). Many times we have concurrent tasks that are almost complete, so the project is almost complete, but since the project progress works off of only completed items, the percentage complete is much lower (and of little use).

Adding another vote for having a progress bar for tasks. Wendy Pardo and Kelly Wilson explained it beautifully.
It feels odd that Wrike doesn't have this functionality, which is so core to project management. It should be a no-brainer to work on adding this functionality. Hopefully soon, then?

Hello Fleur Komen, thank you for sharing. We do understand the need of our members for this functionality and passing on the feedback we receive here to our Product team.

Unfortunately, the team doesn't have this suggestion in their short term roadmap and the status remains as Backburner but we'll be posting here as soon as we have an update 🙋🏻‍♀️

@... can you suggest a workaround? Is there any way (possibly using custom calculations or analytics) to show the percentage of the completion of a task based on its subtask completion?

I just upvoted this as well. This seems like a basic project management function that is very disappointing in Wrike. Is there a public product roadmap? How do we get this off the Back Burner?

I could be off base, but it seems that this request is basic required functionality.  So if it is not in the product initially, OK, but would be added very quickly to make the product valuable.  How the enhancement request process works seems a bit of a mystery because this was first brought up in 2018 and it appeared that something was going to happen - how could we possibly be in 2022 without a clear understanding of a product roadmap?  The functionality as it exists right now is pretty much worthless (you don't get credit for a task until it has been completed - so 99% is the same as 0%) - and having some kind of task completion tracking to give insight into overall project health seems absolutely essential in any PM Management Software - I have never worked in any software where I did not measure task progress against schedule and roll that up to project health.  Being 90% through a task schedule but completed only 10% of the task work vs. 10% of the schedule and completing 90% of the work is 101 to project management.

1

Cost Variance (CV) = Earned Value (EV) – Actual Cost (AC)

2

Schedule Variance (SV) = Earned Value (EV) – Planned Value (PV)

3

Cost Performance Index (CPI) = EV / AC

4

Schedule Performance Index (SPI) = EV / PV

5

EAC = AC + Bottom-up ETC

6

EAC = BAC / Cumulative CPI

7

EAC = AC + (BAC – EV)

8

EAC = AC + [BAC – EV / (Cumulative CPI ´ Cumulative SPI)]

Adding another +1 for the ability to track task progress as a percentage, and for this to be able to drive the project progress percentage. Stephen Keen is 100% correct in saying that Earned Value Management is foundation project management stuff. It is a key method of accurate reporting of project progress and should have been integrated into the product well before now. It's getting frustrating when we hit roadblocks like this in Wrike, jump on the community to raise the issue, and find that this exact problem has been identified since February 2018.

I have attached an example of an active project I am currently managing, with task durations from one day up to two years. The 0/100% completion that results from the current progress calculation method makes the Gantt chart all but useless for tracking progress once those long duration tasks are included. It works OK for short duration tasks of a day or so, possibly up to a week depending on the task, but longer tasks require greater detail than simply "complete/not complete".

If you look at task "DSCQP 2022 - RL.5 - Cement Grinding", we are actually at ~80-90% complete, but I don't have the ability to reflect this accurately in the Gantt chart.

Workarounds like breaking larger tasks into smaller durations may work, but who really wants to have that many tasks kicking around in their to-do list?

Hi Lisa & Cansu

I am at a bit of a loss to understand Wrike's product development time line.

This issue was first raised in 2018 and on August 29, 2019 you stated: "Hey everyone, thanks for your continued support here! Our team has released Project Progress, and a similar solution for tasks is also planned. I can's share ETA at the moment, but I'll let you know as soon as I have more details."

How can over 3 years go by without adding basic functionality that was supposedly on the roadmap?  How can it go from "a similar solution for tasks is also planned" in 2019 to "this suggestion isn't on our team's short-term roadmap" in 2022?

This issues has 3 full pages of comments and support, and 64 followers. In the meantime you release 'Custom Item Types' - all very nice but going beyond core functionality.  Paint me confused!

Hi Stephen Keen, I apologize for the late reply here, I needed to check this internally to be able to provide you with the most up-to-date information. I understand your confusion about these messages from us, unfortunately, teams' plans change sometimes and we communicate those changes here on the Community.

I'm glad to let you know that the team is currently researching the ability to add progress bars to tasks. We'll keep you posted on how the research goes 👍

What a great idea! Would love to see this implemented with the ability to show that progress bar on tasks on the Board view. Man. This would be SO helpful for our agile team to visualize task progress. That would help catch anything that's almost done but needs just a little more attention to get it over the finish line. 🙌

Any update?  I understand that there has been some progress using calculated fields, but still need this natively.  My current solution is to export the project out to Excel, calculate progress there and create the visuals for status meetings.  It works but is time consuming and not optimal.

Now over one year passed and this "basic PM feature" is still not in Wrike?! Hope this important standard feature is coming very soon and will not take another year 🙄."

I am absolutely surpised this has not been implemented. The average of projects per task parent is important for reporting as well. Please add this, some basic project management tools have this. Its so important to know where poeple are on their tasks

Thank you Lisa. It feeds into counting baselines and process improvement. A huge focus that I do in project management is looking for efficiency and the duration and progress really help with that. Crossed fingers we will get it soon!

Hi folks! I've consulted the team internally and it looks like we have a solution for the case in the original post here. You can use percentage-type custom field with conditional formatting and users can manually input the percentage done:

Could you please share your thoughts on this?

This is helpful, Lisa! It's a solid start, but a native Wrike field would be best practice. Thinking now, though of how we could use this to calculate a more accurate project % complete than what currently exists! We will definitely give this a try.

Just coming to this thread after having googled how to add progress to tasks in Wrike! I am somewhat, if not a lot, disheartened to note that the conversation started back in 2018 - almost six years ago. I understand that product development has to be prioritised but is there an explanation as to why this functionality hasn't been added yet? It surely isn't complicated to do so? What drives the backlog prioritisation and what has been prioritised over this? It would be nice to get the basics right over snazzier features, and task progress is an essential for reporting. I appreciate that you can add this manually under %complete, but that is too open to interpretation and human error for my liking.
