[Beta] Convert Tasks to Projects & Vice Versa ๐
CompletedHello everyone! ๐
Many of you know that last year, our team started researching the most upvoted Community idea ever - Converting tasks to projects (and vice versa). We analyzed your previous feedback and asked additional questions. Your input really helped us in this research, and today, weโre happy to invite you to beta test this feature ๐ฅ
Beta Test: Convert Tasks to Projects & Vice Versa
Here's how the conversion works:
You can convert items using the The "Change Item Type" option. It is located in the three-dot menu of the item and allows you to convert any item type (task, project, or folder-based) to any different types. When you initiate the conversion, a new item is created in the same location as the original, with your data copied over. The original item is then moved to the recycle bin.
What's Preserved in the Conversion:
- Title
- Status
- Start and due dates (if applicable)
- Assignee
- Location
- Custom field values (even if a custom field is not available for tasks, your values, including those from calculated custom fields, are preserved)
- Description
- Task-based subitems
- Attachments
- Sharing settings
What's Not Preserved:
- Item history and comments
- Approvals
- Tracked time
- Dependencies
- Recurrences
- Effort
- Item ID
Limitations:
- The new conversion logic may not be available in all instances where you can change item types, but it's always accessible from the Item View's context menu "Change item type."
- Task-based subitems attached to a task-based item (subtask) cannot be converted into a project-based type.
- A project or folder with subprojects or subfolders cannot be converted into task-based types.
- The conversion (changing item type between task-based and project-based types) cannot be undone.
- Mass-converting items is not possible.
- This setting is available account-wide only for Biz+ accounts.
To participate in the beta test, simply let us know in the comments, and we'll enable the beta for you ๐
Please keep in mind that we're currently in the beta phase. As such, the functionality may change, be discontinued, or not work as expected. Your feedback is crucial as our Product team continues to refine this potential future feature. A big thank you for your continued input and support ๐

I'd like to be in the beta.ย
The conversion functions in both directions. One must keep up with what happens to any tasks that may be associated with a project that is converted after adding them though.ย
Here is a use case situation that I never considered until it happened.
I monitor what our other approver does with incoming project requests.
A project request form comes completed.
We have 2 approvers. Only one makes the decision to create a new project, etc.
I check to learn the result of a request and received a "you do not have access to this information" response.
The other approver converted the project request to a task, renamed it appropriately as a task, then moved it to the appropriate project folder as a task in that folder.ย
Here is why:
If a project comes in from the project request form, and an approver changes the name to a task name, the natural thing to do is to convert it to a task and place is under another project.
Then the link to locate that request is broken and the other approvers on project request form cannot locate the request unless they track down the approver who changed the name and put it somewhere else to ask what happened in order to actually find the request afterwards.
Hi folks, huge thanks for your interest and the feedback you've shared with us so far! We truly appreciate it ๐
Our team is now getting ready for the release that should happen in the coming weeks. We'll let you know once converting items is released here in the Community as always ๐ค

Would love to be a beta tester when you can take on more testers. I ended up on this page because I created an item as a Project and quickly realized that it really should be a Task. Would LOVE to have this feature available to me.ย Keep me posted!!
Would love to be included, but I understand that you are at the maximum users. Once available, if you can please let me know, I would really appreciate it :)
