[Beta] Convert Tasks to Projects & Vice Versa ๐
CompletedHello everyone! ๐
Many of you know that last year, our team started researching the most upvoted Community idea ever - Converting tasks to projects (and vice versa). We analyzed your previous feedback and asked additional questions. Your input really helped us in this research, and today, weโre happy to invite you to beta test this feature ๐ฅ
Beta Test: Convert Tasks to Projects & Vice Versa
Here's how the conversion works:
You can convert items using the The "Change Item Type" option. It is located in the three-dot menu of the item and allows you to convert any item type (task, project, or folder-based) to any different types. When you initiate the conversion, a new item is created in the same location as the original, with your data copied over. The original item is then moved to the recycle bin.
What's Preserved in the Conversion:
- Title
- Status
- Start and due dates (if applicable)
- Assignee
- Location
- Custom field values (even if a custom field is not available for tasks, your values, including those from calculated custom fields, are preserved)
- Description
- Task-based subitems
- Attachments
- Sharing settings
What's Not Preserved:
- Item history and comments
- Approvals
- Tracked time
- Dependencies
- Recurrences
- Effort
- Item ID
Limitations:
- The new conversion logic may not be available in all instances where you can change item types, but it's always accessible from the Item View's context menu "Change item type."
- Task-based subitems attached to a task-based item (subtask) cannot be converted into a project-based type.
- A project or folder with subprojects or subfolders cannot be converted into task-based types.
- The conversion (changing item type between task-based and project-based types) cannot be undone.
- Mass-converting items is not possible.
- This setting is available account-wide only for Biz+ accounts.
To participate in the beta test, simply let us know in the comments, and we'll enable the beta for you ๐
Please keep in mind that we're currently in the beta phase. As such, the functionality may change, be discontinued, or not work as expected. Your feedback is crucial as our Product team continues to refine this potential future feature. A big thank you for your continued input and support ๐

Agree with Shona Snowden. We rarely create a blank project or a project item type. We mainly create projects from blueprints. Also, the team immediately noted that losing the comments would be a concern, especially since there's no undo. Even a quick archive of the comments and history pasted to the description would be sufficient. But promising overall!
Excuse me, Do I have to download something to enable the beta? I can't see the new feature right now... Thanks!
Interested! Thank you!
I am interested, please sign me up.
Shona Snowden, Nathan Jones Appreciate your feedback, folks! ๐ค
Massimiliano Tasin, Tabitha Taylor-Weber, Pavani Pagadala We are not enabling this beta for more users at the moment (as mentioned in my previous comment). Thank you very much for your interest, we'll keep you posted on how this feature progresses and if we need more beta testers ๐

This beta has been delightful. I need this feature because Projects don't show up on the Kanban board view (maybe a new feature..?) so first Tasks are added to the Kanban board for review and then once approved we convert the Task into a Project. I wish it was still visible on the board at that point but the transition to a Project is a gamechanger at least.
Lisa Not clear to me whether I was included in the Beta. I do not see the feature active for my account (convert to project is not available in the drop down from change item type).ย
Please include our instance ASAP.
I am interested in this!
Would love to test please :)
Our team has been using this feature. It's been very nice to be able to duplicate the project and convert it to a task because it still has all the information in the description from the original form. One suggestion that I think could improve the experience is the ability to set up an automation so that once it's converted to a task, the workflow changes from the project workflow to the task workflow.ย
I like this functionality and I'm happy that it keeps the informational text when switching from Project to Task and from Task to Project. I second Rosebelle Easthom's idea above that automations are created so that once this conversion option is chosen, the appropriate task/project workflow can be selected for a number of items with a minimum of fuss.
I do wish that this feature did not delete comment text since we rely on this heavily as a record that certain steps have been followed accurately. Other than that, I find this very simple and straightforward to use! I tried to break it but I couldn't -- haha!
Please add. Thank you.
Hello! We would like to try the beta version.ย
I agree with other's suggestions about this functionality (automation in flow and allowing commenting to flow in). I'd also like an alert that lets you know that if you are converting you would lose out on specific information with it. I don't think people realize that they are potentially losing data, so if implemented it would be great to let them know. Otherwise, I've been super pleased with this functionality and have already used it quite a bit! It's been immensely helpful to be able to adjust items into different types. It's saved us a ton of time because before we had to create new ones, and delete others. What would be ideal is if we could also convert and pull in a blueprint at the same time. This convert/use blueprint at a project/task/folder level would be helpful in general. I am aware that you can set specific blueprints on the form, but our team has to assess requests before pulling in project blueprints. Right now, we end up end up with a project within a project that is only a single project. To avoid duplicate projects, but preserve the information from the request, we have to pull in the blueprint, unnest the tasks, and then delete that "project" from the project it was nested within. This is cumbersome, so at any time, it would be great if we could "convert" and use a blueprint. :)ย
Hello -- could you enable the beta for me and Kristi Horvath? Thanks!
I would like the beta version of this as well. Thank you!
Hi again, everyone! I have some good news to share: we've decided to enable the beta for all your accounts here, so if commented in this thread previously, it should now be available to you โจ
We can't add more people to the beta any more for now, but if the beta has been enabled for you, please be sure to share your feedback with us, it's crucial at this stage and greatly impacts the future development of this feature ๐
I'd also like to point out that, as mentioned in the post, this is an account-wide beta, which means we're not able to add it to individual users, but only for the entire accounts.
Also, please note the the beta is available in the three-dot menu of your items under the "Change item type" option.ย
Pavani Pagadala I believe your Account team at Wrike is currently discussing this beta and the possibility of enabling it for your account separately ๐

Great thanks!! I've just tried to change from task from project, it works but maybe there's also a bug: I can see the project in the black menu on the right, but not inside the folder.
Thanks for flagging Massimiliano Tasin, I've shared your comment with the team already ๐

I'd like this feature enabled, please!
What happens if you convert a task to a project and the feature is discontinued? What is preserved and what is not preserved?
Can my account please be a tester for this function? This would make our lives much easier.
Thanks!
Lisa can you enable the beta for me please?
Hi folks! Apologies, but we don't have capacity to include more beta testers at this moment. We'll let you know if that's possible later on ๐ Thank you for your interest!ย
