SPI - Schedule Performance Index - Percentage Complete vs. Plan

Hi Wrike Team!

I propose adding a small tweak to the newly added Percent Complete indicator to tell you how your project is performing against plan.

SPI is a valuable performance metric on projects and portfolios, since it shows actual performance against planned project schedule.

Modifying the % Complete indicator would do the trick (example: 12% / 20%). 12% Earned Value / 20% Planned Value = SPI of 0.6 . 

Now you not only know that your project is 12% complete, but that it is running 40% behind schedule! On-time/on-schedule performance will yield an SPI of 1.0.

This is a key metric used in Project Management. Wrike provides a nice article about Earned Value . . . but it seems there are few traditional EVM tools built in WRIKE analytics? https://www.wrike.com/project-management-guide/faq/how-to-calculate-earned-value-in-project-management/

i agree with you, it should be very useful to have such indicator, but unfornately i'm not able to find it in Wrike.

Hi nicola mariucci, thank you for bumping this thread! There's no out-of-the-box solution for this in Wrike, but I think it can still be achieved using different functionality. For example, it's possible to use Gantt Chart snapshots where you can create baselines and compare the states your projects are in through different time periods. Another solution could be to use calculated custom fields and create formulas to track different dates, delays etc.

This is really a problem  because this indicator of project delay is so important..and yes , as you have said upon, Wrike only shows me a teorethical progress value but we can not know how long the project delayed is.

Hi Jose Julian Arias T, thank you for chiming in! One possible way to recreate the Schedule Performance Index (SPI) would be to first create two number-type custom fields in your account: one for "Earned value" (EV) and a second one for "Planned value" (PV). The SPI could be represented in a calculated custom field that would consist of the following formula: EV / PV.
 
In order for this option to work, you would need to update the values of your tasks. For example, it would be necessary to add the value "1" to the PV custom field if the task should be completed by the current date (if its due date has passed, the "1" value should be added to the field). You would also add 1 to the EV custom field if the task has been actually completed.
 
Remember to use the SUM option to aggregate values at the project level so the calculations will be accurate.
 
  
 
In order to make sure that the values are being updated properly, you can create automation rules to trigger @mentions. You can create one automation rule that would trigger a comment once the due date has passed:
 
  
 
And a second rule that would also trigger a comment when the task has been changed to "Completed":
 
  
 
The SPI values should be interpreted as follows:
 
>1 = you are ahead of schedule.
 
< 1 = you are behind schedule.

Hi Juan,

This is a great example of how to manipulate Wrike to produce the SPI.  My question is, could you take this a step further and create an automation trigger to add the 1 to the PV field once the due date has passed and the task is not marked complete?  And then another automation trigger to add the 1 to the EV field once the task is marked complete?  Do you think that would work to take the manual updates required out of the process?

Hi Teresa Harding, thank you for your reply. I'm glad to confirm that with the latest improvements in Automation this is now possible 🙂 I will show you how to set up your rules below:

1 - Add 1 to the PV field once the due date has passed and is not completed rule

In the triggers section, select "Date is approaching or overdue" and choose the options "due date" and "has passed".



 

Secondly, in the conditions section, open the 'Status' tab and tick all the status groups except for the "Competed' one:

And lastly, in the actions section, select the option "Change custom field", where you'll be able to indicate that "1" has to be added to the "PV" custom field: 

Done!

2 - Ad 1 to EV when task is completed rule

In the triggers section, select the option "When status changes to" and tick the option "All completed".

As for the action, select "Change custom field" and indicate that "1" should be added to the "EV" field:


That's all!

Also, I'd like to mention that more updates are to be announced about Automation, I will keep you informed!

I agree with the original post - with Wrike being a project management platform, I think there should be more general fields within Wrike for EV, PV, etc, and a field for actual formulas calculating SPI and CPI so that one doesn't have to create custom fields and a custom formula each time.  These are PM formulas... they should exist in a PM platform.
