Being able to automatically add followers to work (via @mentioning or via automation)

I'm having a bit of a frustrating exchange with Support regarding the topic of followers and how they are added, as well as contradicting information being given by the Chatbot.

I did a quick test on my end and can confirm the following behaviour regarding followers being added when being @mentioned on an item:

  • If the work item is a Task, then @mentioning a user (who is not an assignee) will automatically add them (and myself - the author) as followers
  • If the work item is a Project, then @mentioning a user (who is not an assignee) will not automatically add them (nor myself - the author) as followers

My recommendation here would be to have similar behaviour when @mentioning users (and creating) work between Tasks and Projects; @mentioning a user (or more) on a Project adds them automatically as Followers.

I would have loved to solve for this via automation, but there's no automation to add followers (part 2 of this request). It would be nice if an automation action would be available to Add followers. In both cases, there are instances where folks don't necessarily need to be assigned to projects, but need to follow them to be aware and follow updates. With the volume of work that comes in, we don't want to spend more time to manually add multiple people; that's the whole point of automation and I know automation has been a hot topic these days here on the platform.

I would also find it nice if there was a "Follow Project/Task" button easily visible that users could click if they want to follow (or unfollow) a task or project. Having it hidden in the 3 dot menu means that a lot of users don't know/remember that is it there and is an option for their important projects.
