My name is Slava and I am a Senior Product Manager at Wrike.
Weโre excited to announce a highly requested update: Custom Field Descriptions are now available!
Whatโs new? ๐
You can now add optional descriptions to your custom fields to bring more clarity and structure to your workspace. Whether you want to remind your team what a field is for or indicate who owns it, these descriptions help reduce confusion and help everyone move faster.
Important: ๐
Right now, custom field descriptions are available only to admins (Account and Space Admins) and users with the right to edit custom fields. They can view and manage these descriptions directly in the Custom Field Editor and Custom Field Management.
There is a 1000 character limit to the descriptions; they support rich formatting, and you can use Quick search to look for specific custom field descriptions.ย
Why does this matter? ๐
We know that workspaces with dozens of custom fields can get messy quickly. This update is designed to:
- Reduce selection errors
- Improve reporting accuracy
- Make workspace setup more scalable for your team

Weโre working on expanding this feature further! Soon, end-users will be able to see custom field descriptions when they search for custom fields or view them in contextโjust hover to see the description as a tooltip. Tooltips with field descriptions and other custom field information will appear in Table View, Item View, and custom item type configurations.

Whatโs new?
You can now see helpful descriptions for custom fields in several places:
These tooltips donโt just show the descriptionโthey also display the field type, available options (for single- or multi-select fields), and other important details to help you work more efficiently.
A quick note:
Custom field info tooltips are currently not supported in some views and tools, such as Board view or Calendars.

Slava Kogan Is this only supposed to work in the custom field page in settings, or should it also show up as a tooltip when hovering over a custom field in the space?
Abraham Jacobowitz Hello! This functionality is available for both account-level and space-level custom fields management. Currently, the full description appears as a tooltip when you hover over a custom field, but this feature is only visible to account and space admins. Weโre planning to make it available to regular users soon as well.

Slava Kogan I am not able to see the description when I hover over the custom - could you please show with an example?
Love this update! We currently have almost 300 custom fields across all our various teams and spaces. I recently created a spreadsheet which so I could keep track of all the fields and add descriptions to remind myself why it was created and which team it belongs to as I create a lot of very specific fields for different teams.ย I did this after a field was mistakenly removed.ย Love that I can now have all the descriptions within Wrike.

Hi Archana Maltesh, the description is not currently shown in Item view (it will be available soon!). But it should be visible when you hover over the description cell in the table. Does this help?ย

Look for the newย โCopy entire tableโย button in both account-level and space-level custom fields, right at the top-right corner of the table.

Slava Kogan The new copy ability is fantastic! We have needed that for a long time. One more step closer to cleaning up our custom fields!
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on how this works in practice. I'm trying to add text to the field description for custom fields in a Space where Iโm both the Space admin and an account-level admin. However, whenever I enter text into the description field, it doesnโt seem to save.
Has anyone else experienced this? Am I missing a step, or is there a workaround?

EI experienced the same issue so I reached out to Wrike support. If you hit Enter after typing the description, and then click Save the description is saved. Hope this helps
Jessica Carr I was having this issue too. It's working now, but after I add the text, I have to hit ENTER before saving it. Have you tried that?
Lisa I've added some descriptions, but they don't show up in the table view when I hover over the custom fields. I'm an admin of the space and of the account. Am I doing something wrong? Do you have a video you can share to show the functionality?

Lisa I am also experiencing the same issue Ashley is encountering whereby I cannot view the descriptions when I hover over the custom fields. I have admin permissions in both the Space and account. Can you help?

This feature where field descriptions are visible on hovering over custom fields outside of space and account field management table is coming soon but not yet available at the moment.ย
