Add the ability to include single select field values in custom field and report formulas

Let admins (at least) assign numeric values to each choice in a (text) single-select custom field. Then let users include those numeric values in the calculations of formula custom fields and reporting calculated fields.

I didn't see this requested yet, but it would save me a lot of time exporting data to calculate scores elsewhere.

Thanks for reaching out John Egleston! Do I understand correctly that you'd like admins to set up default values for custom fields?

Yes, Lisa, that seems the right level - whoever can edit a single-select custom field (space or account) should be able to assign values, and then anyone who can see it (and author reports or more custom fields) should be able to calculate based on it.

Lisa Confirming I have the same request, but more important is the ability to allow calculations on text fields. For example, if I have a form where I have a multi-select question for users to select 1, 3, or 5, I want that to link to a field against which I can do a calculation. There is no option for that now. I can only select a number, and then if you select a number question on a form, it is purely a box that allows user to input any number. There is a gap.

I am also looking for this option.
I am trying to set up a custom field formula with one of the calculations being based on a High, Medium, Low priority that the project owner sets. I can't find anyway to include this value in the formula without someone having to manually translate High, Medium, Low to numeric values in a different column on each and every project.
I would appreciate any insight or help on whether something like this is possible.

Hello 👋

Brandon Miller and Claire Findlay thank you both for supporting this suggestion, clearly explaining your use case and sharing your feedback. We’ll make sure your comments are forwarded to our Product team.👍

Claire, As you may already know, formula fields currently work only with number, currency, percent, duration, and date fields, and they can’t use text or single-select fields (like High/Medium/Low priority) directly in calculations. A workaround I can think of is using Automations:

Create a numeric custom field for the priority value
  • Go to your project or space.
  • Add a new custom field (for example, “Priority Numeric”).
  • Set the field type to Number. This field will store the numeric value for each priority level.

Set up automation rules
Note: Create one rule for each possible value of your Priority field.

For each rule:
  • Trigger: When the Priority field changes.
  • Condition: If Priority is High (or Medium, or Low).
  • Action: Set Priority Numeric to the corresponding value (e.g., 3 for High, 2 for Medium, 1 for Low).
Example (High):
  • When: Custom field “Priority” changes
  • And if: Priority is High
  • Then: Change custom field “Priority Numeric” to 3
Repeat for Medium (set to 2) and Low (set to 1).
Once this mapping is in place, you can reference Priority Numeric in your formulas.

I understand this might not be a perfect solution, but I hope it helps in the meantime. We’ll keep you posted on any updates. Thanks again!
