How to avoid Parent Tasks displaying as Unassigned in Task Dashboard

I have Parent tasks in my Gantt chart that have Children assigned to different users.  Nobody "owns" the Parent task.  How do I avoid the Parent Task (Development) showing up as an unassigned task in my Dashboard?  It's difficult to use this dashboard given all of the Parent Tasks across multiple projects.

Example:

1. Development

1.1  New Screen        Tom

1.2 New Script          Bill

1.3 New Report        Harry

Hi Joe Ketchum! Do you have a lot of users to whom these tasks can be assigned? Because it's possible to setup a widget to only show tasks assigned to certain users through the Assignee filter. That way, unassigned task should not be shown on a widget.

Thanks for the suggestion Lisa.  But my goal is to identify the unassigned tasks so they can be given to a member of the team.  But with all of the parent tasks in the list it makes it difficult to identify the actual tasks that require work.

Hi Joe Ketchum, thank you for the additional details. In order to avoid showing the parent task in your widget, a possible workaround would be to create a checkbox type custom field named "Unassigned subtask" - or similar - and then use this custom field as a filter:

If you don't wish to create a custom field to achieve this, you could use the filter to display only unassigned tasks, but this option wouldn't prevent the parent tasks to be shown:

Please, let us know if you have any additional questions!

Thanks Juan.  I was considering doing something similar with a Custom Item Type of "Parent" or "Summary" Task.  I could then replace my existing tasks in my Project Blueprint and ignore them in my Dashboards.  I was curious to see if someone had an alternative approach before making this change and updating my projects.

Hi Joe Ketchum, if a parent task is only a way to group other task you can use folder.

I use folders in my blueprints to divide projects into phases.

Other way, if you use effort allocation is to exlude task, in your dashboard with effort disabled.

Hi Pietro, I had not considered folders for dividing phases.  Something to consider.  I like your suggestion for effort allocation even more.  I'm going to look at that now.  I'll post here if I have any follow up questions.  Thanks for your feedback!

I agree with Pietro, using folders would be a clean and straight solution! Unassigned tasks should always be avoided!
