Timeline: Grouping tasks vertically, freedom to click and drag vertically
Being able to click and drag tasks vertically would help project managers group tasks together based on departments. This is helpful to see to see what tasks are on the horizon for departments and team leaders can focus preparation much easier.
For example, see below a mockup made in Excel. It's much easier to understand what the teams need to focus on in this kind of Gantt view.
Please consider adding this feature; being able to click and drag tasks vertically helps with overall presentation. thanks.
Hi Jimmy, thanks for sharing this idea, this looks really interesting! I wanted to share another user's idea about organization which I thought you might find interesting too, check out this Community post about prioritising and arranging tasks and users on the Workload.
Something else I wanted to mention, though I can see that it isn't as straightforward as your idea when it come to working on multiple Projects, is using a department based Folder structure, and then viewing these departments on the Timeline to see tasks sorted by them:
Hopefully this can help you or other users!
Hi Anastasia,
I grouped the tasks as you mentioned, but wanted a way to prioritize the groups. I found a way similar to that in the screenshot, which is making a dummy task and set them in date order to force the groups in a specific vertical order. But if this can be made into a feature without the dummy task, that would be great.
Thanks,
Jimmy, thanks for sharing this additional info!
Does the new timeline view allow for this?
Hi Jimmy! Not exactly, though it does allow for new sorting methods: you can sort tasks by the columns in the table, simply by clicking on the column header.
We are using "dummy tasks" as well in order to have more control over the timeline organization. But, when you are dealing with a lot of projects/folders, and need to keep track of 'dummy tasks' (which end up being noise next to real tasks) then this becomes quite complicated to manage. We also would like to see a better solution. As a minimum requirement, the timeline should represent the alphabetical order of the folders (A, B, C, D) and not sort folders based on due dates of infividual tasks as is happening at the moment. Thank you!
