Not trying to be rude, but maybe they're looking to see who's taking the time to test before complaining...ย  ;-)ย  Wink! Wink!ย  LOL!ย  I'm going to defend Wrike a bit here.ย  This is a fantastic tool in so many areas beyond just project scheduling.ย  This feature is extremely important for us as well, but it is worth the wait because of the other functionality offered in Wrike.ย  As for complaining about making a nice background, that's a project that probably takes about an 30 minutes versus months of development and testing for real features.ย  It doesn't bother me that they offer some custom backgrounds once in a while because I'm sure it's a completely different team that creates those versus the functional features.

@Megan, is there another tool that allows for lead/lag dependencies to be set in a list or table view?ย  I've never tried so I don't actually know the answer.ย  The Gantt was the only logical place for me personally to set those dependencies.ย  But everyone has a different way of working.

Maybe in the future we can all try to better understand the challenges faced by development teams and not just assume no one is working on it.

I'm finding the only way to create a lead / lag dependency is in Gantt view. If a dependency is created in any other view, you then have to navigate to Gantt and add the lead / lag there. Is this what others are experiencing?

@David - I can only do the lead/lag in Gantt - no where else.

@Trevor - lots of other tools allow you to edit right in the table mode or within a task.ย  Project.ย  ProjectManager.com.ย  SmartSheet.ย  Workfront.

Also, for what it's worth, for as big of a deal that this is on Community you would think that Wrike would make a big deal about announcing it's availability.ย  That is what I was getting at with the grandiose announcements about changing your theme, which has no affect on functionality, versus the non-existent updates on how this feature was progressing (and is now semi-live).

Well it is suddenly working for me.ย  Only thing I did different was make a new task with dependency and lag.ย  After that I could add it to existing tasks.ย  I think we are being watched...

I appreciate your point of view, Trevor! How many times in OUR day-to-day do we commit to a project, then find it's a lot more complex than we thought? It happens to us all. Projects drag out all the time over here! Wrike probably didn't want to announce it until it was perfect and testing was complete, to avoid additional headaches and support tickets.

With that said, so excited to see that this is happening! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

@Anna I see your point and Trevor's points, but with any project that is running late, we as PMs owe the stakeholders updates, even if there are not firm dates, just like Wrike owes/owed us updates on things.ย  There was not a single comment by a Wrike team member since January 3rd with multiple requests for an update since then.ย  To some of us that made it seem that nothing was being done to help get this solution to fruition.ย  It's all about keeping your stakeholders informed so they are soothed, smoothed, and waiting with open arms instead of pitchforks like some of were not knowing what was going on.

@Megan, your point is well noted and I appreciate your perspective.ย  I agree that at least one more update would have been beneficial.ย  Every company has a different approach with transparency based on information value, customer expectations, and company dynamics that we wouldn't be privy to unless we worked for that company.ย  As community members, we're a part of the noisy minority, but also a group of influencers.ย  It's always a balancing act to manage the needs of the noisy minority versus the silent majority.ย  Every company struggles with that.

    Cheers!

I did test this new function and believe I've found a bug... at least from my perspective (and I've reported it)

If I add +5 to the end of an existing dependency, it does move the tasks out 5 days. However, if I remove the +5 from the Predecessors, it does NOT shift the task back to starting right after its predecessor. So you have to manually change the start date of the task it moved out back to its original start date.ย

This would be frustrating if you were just doing โ€œWhat ifโ€ tests to see the impact but could not โ€œundoโ€ your change.ย

Adding to Keith's comment. I found what I believe is the same thing when dragging tasks around in the Gantt chart. The successor task moves forward if the predecessor task is moved forward, but the successor doesn't move back if you pull the the predecessor task back.ย

They just put out an updated version that now auto-corrects the dependency if you remove the lead/lag value as well as any other task dependent on that task that was moved.ย

So now it looks like it works the way it should ๐Ÿ™‚

Kudos to Wrike for the quick fix.

Okay, so we appreciate the effort here. Great job on improving the Gantt view. We are happy that we are able to test this beta feature. It looks very similar to MS Project. So, that is a good start.๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Business Days vs Calendar Days vs Working Days

I need to be able to specify business/banking days vs calendar days for a given task with lead and lag time. I would imagine that Attorneys would need this just as much as Realtors. Or, imagine an Academic or a Teacher who needs to create lead and lag with school days. Wrike allows for scheduling when we are working, but we also need to keep track of when others are open for business or which days contracts are executed.ย

In an ideal world, we would be able to subscribe or identify which days are business, banking, court, or school days with editable calendars. But, for those of us that work round the clock, we don't want to limit our resources during those times because our resources can execute other functions on days when our vendors or clients are closed or our contracts are not requiring attention.

Rescheduling a single task vs all tasks in the dependency

NOTE: If you hold down Shift while dragging, everything is preserved -- But, shouldn't that be the default? Please fix this or make it crystal clear to users that clicking and dragging will screw up everything. Even Wrike sales people aren't aware of this feature. (See David and Keith's comments as to how this is confusing for users)ย

Currently, Wrike is re-scheduling tasks that conflict with dependencies. Why would you allow this? I need to be able to set lead and lag times that can't be so easily overridden. Wrike should prompt me to make a choice or warn me before it implements a choice if I change a date that causes a conflict. Isn't that programming 101?

If Megan isn't 100% satisfied, then this shouldn't be counted as launched yet

Furthermore, we need to see the lead and lag in every view where the dependencies are edited (see Megan's feedback). It should allow us to pick banking days or business days or court days from a drop down next to the number of days. How about a nice GUI next to the dependency type that lets us pick a plus or a minus sign, enter the number of days, and pick the type of days?

In the Task Window Dependency Dialogue:

[FS/FF/SS/SF] [+/- ] [enter days] [days type drop down for Business/Banking/Court/School/etc.]

    Dates shouldn't be requiredย

Perhaps most importantly, adding lead and lag times forces a date to be picked. Please allow for dependencies without a date. Not only is this important for blueprints and templates, but we need to be able to plan task dependencies based on their relationships to each other and have those relationships respected before dates are assigned. Often we know the lead and lag for a dependency, but we do not know the date. When you force a date, you are creating a bunch of inaccurate data in our tool.ย

For our use case, just imagine you have to keep track of every task in a Real Estate deal. We need to layout all our dependencies without dates. We have some key dates that adjust the dates of everything else. And, we don't want to enter them until they are firm or we have a good place holder. For example, we may have to do an inspection within 17 calendar days after a mutually accepted agreement and we may have to provide a notice within 2 days of that time period expiring. I want to enter the mutual acceptance date and have the others automatically populate the right dates based on adding the dependent date. But, I don't want junk dates in the tool.

This is a good start. And, we feel that there is a lot of room for improvement with how Wrike is handling dependencies.ย

Oh, I had this same issue when I was setting up my templates.ย  The way I was able to make the template work was by using the "old" style of templating.ย

First, build out your project template as a regular project and use the current date as the start.ย  Then once everything is built out, set all of the tasks to "Deferred" status.ย  Deferred status doesn't show in the views, so it won't confuse anyone. To use the template you right click on the project and choose "Duplicate".ย  You will have the option to set a new start date and the rest of the dates will be built based on the template project. Also, when you duplicate the project all the deferredย tasks will be set to "Active" automatically.ย

Unfortunately, this work around doesn't work for us, because we use custom work flows to indicate how a task is to be acted upon. We have multiple active and deferred statuses for each work flow. Plus, this work around requires all tasks to be deferred until they are all active. And, this creates junk active dates just because a project is all active or all deferred off of a blueprint.

I just successfully added dependencies to my project template and was able to clear the dates that had auto-populated!ย  This is going to be very helpful for our team to have a template with this information already included!ย  The only thing I would suggest is to eliminate the auto-population of dates (with the exception of defined predecessor dependencies).ย  It is a little cumbersome to have to clear all the dates.ย  Nonetheless, I am very happy to have this new capability!
