Sorting on the Gantt Chart
Sorting in the Gantt Chart helps you sort and manually reorder items so the timeline reflects your team’s priorities and dependencies. You can quickly change the sort from the toolbar to sort items by priority, due date, status, name, or predecessor, so the Gantt Chart view matches how your team plans and reviews work.

The Gantt Chart has a default sorting order for folders and spaces (Gantt manual order) and for projects (cascade sorting), but you can change how tasks are sorted to match your team’s needs.
By default, when you open a project in the Gantt chart, cascade sorting is applied to tasks, folders, and projects. A task’s, folder’s, or project’s vertical position in the Gantt chart view (how close it is to the top of the screen) is determined by the following rules of cascade sorting:
-
Projects are sorted by the earliest start date of any task in each project. If a project's earliest task starts later than the earliest tasks in other projects, it will appear lower in the list even if its own project start date is earlier. The Cascade sort order uses the first task’s start date, not the project’s start date.
-
Folders are sorted by the start date of their earliest task in ascending order. Folders with earlier start dates appear closer to the top of the screen than other folders and projects.
-
Projects without dates and scheduled tasks, and folders without scheduled tasks, are sorted alphanumerically and appear below all other projects and folders.
-
Subfolders and subprojects appear directly underneath their parent folder or project.
-
Within a folder or project, tasks with dependencies appear first, and followed by tasks sorted by their start dates.
-
If more than one task has the same start date, the task with the shorter duration appears first. If multiple tasks or dependency chains containing tasks have the same start date and duration, then they're sorted alphanumerically.
When you change the order of an item on the Gantt Chart view manually, Wrike saves this as the Gantt manual order. You can switch back to this sort order at any time.
Tasks in the timeline follow the order as tasks in the table. When you rearrange tasks in the table, tasks in the timeline move up or down to match the new order, and vice versa.
The Gantt Manual order is not preserved when you duplicate a blueprint. Use priority sorting instead if you need to keep a consistent order.
Reorder tasks on the timeline:
-
Click and hold a taskbar on the timeline.
-
Move the task to the appropriate location.
-
Release your mouse.
This way you can rearrange the order of tasks within one location or move items to a different folder or project within one view.
Rearrange tasks from the table:
-
Click on the Sort button on the toolbar 1.
-
Select Gantt manual order from the list 2.
-
Click and hold a task's row number from the table portion of the view.
-
Move the task to the appropriate location on the table.
-
Release your mouse.
Tip
To select a range of tasks, click the first task's row, press and hold Shift on your keyboard, and click the row of the last task you want. Once the range is selected, you can drag and drop it the same way you do with a single task.
You can manually sort items only in the table portion of the New Gantt Chart view. The timeline follows the same order as the table, so when you rearrange items in the table, the items on the timeline shift to match the new order.
-
Navigate to the selected folder, project, or space and switch to Gantt Chart 1.
-
Click the Try new Gantt Chart button in the upper right-hand corner of your workspace 2.
-
Click on the Sort button 3 on the toolbar.
-
Select Gantt manual order from the list 4.
-
Click and hold the drag icon located to the left of the item row’s number.
-
Move the task to the appropriate location on the table.
-
Release your mouse.
Note
You can manually sort all item types in the new Gantt Chart view, not just tasks. However, manual sorting in the New Gantt Chart view isn't available when you use Single list of tasks mode.
You can sort tasks, folders, and projects by Priority, Due date, Status, Name, Predecessor and Gantt manual order.
-
Click the applied sorting option 1 from the toolbar.
-
Select the sorting option you want to apply from the drop-down 2 that appears.
-
Click the column title 3 to sort the values in ascending order, then click it again to sort them in descending order.
