๐ฅ Converting Tasks to Projects and Vice Versa ๐ฅ
Angeheftet AngesagtHello everyone! ๐
So many of you have been waiting for this ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅย
We're beyond thrilled to announce that the ability to convert tasks to projects and vice versa is now available to all customers! ๐ฅ This feature is the most upvoted Community idea ever, with over 600 votes, and we're so excited to deliver it to you!ย
This feature was born from your feedback and insights, and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who shared their use cases, feedback, and participated in the beta testing. Your input was instrumental in shaping this feature ๐
Converting Tasks to Projects & Vice Versa
โ๏ธ Here's how the conversion works:
You can convert items using the Change Item Type option, located in the three-dot menu of the item. This allows you to convert any item type (task, project, or folder-based) to any different type. When you initiate the conversion, a new item is created in the same location as the original, with your data copied over. The original item is then moved to the recycle bin.
What's Preserved in the Conversion ๐:
Title, status, start and due dates, assignee(s), location, custom field values, description, task-based subitems, attachments, and sharing settings.
What's Not Preserved ๐:
Item history and comments, approvals, tracked time, dependencies, recurrences, effort, item ID.ย
Here are some more things you need to know:ย
- The new conversion logic is always accessible from the Item View's context menu "Change item type."
- Task-based subitems attached to a task-based item (subtask) cannot be converted into a project-based type.
- A project or folder with subprojects or subfolders cannot be converted into task-based types.
- The conversion (changing item type between task-based and project-based types) cannot be undone.
- Mass-converting items is not possible.
This release is a huge milestone for Wrike, our Product team and, of course, our Community, which means you! We are truly grateful for your feedback and support of this feature, we couldn't have done it without you! ๐
We're looking forward to hearing about your experiences with this new feature! Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comments below ๐

Lisa After playing around with this I have learned that I only see the option 'change item type' in list view or on the sidebar. I also cannot convert a task to a project I only have the ability to convert a project to a task no matter which view is being used
It looks like since the item ID isn't preserved, changing an item's type will change its URL. Since we link to items from other platforms, we'll just need to be aware of this and refresh the URL there, right?
<3ย
Connor McGuan I've now asked our Support team to look into this for you ๐
John Egleston That's correct, URLs will change because IDs are not preserved.

Before converting our projects to tasks (so they could be hidden when complete within a folder), I didn't realize we'd lose all our comment history. Please advise how I can revert a project (which was converted to tasks) back to the project state, so I can get all our comments back. I can't find a recycle bin anywhere in our account and I'm an admin. Thank you!
Hi Nora Morris, welcome to the forums ๐ย
You can find the recycle bin under your profile picture menu:
I hope it helps!ย

This feature is not available to our team either.
Patricia Cole, Try the following, it doesn't appear in the context menu for me either, but works this way
Click on the task
That should bring up the information panel
Click on the 3 dots on the top right side
Click Change Item Type
ย
Ped Watt thank you for the suggestion. I tried it there too and the option does not appear.
Patricia Cole is it a top level task or task nested inside another task?
aka
Project
ย ย ย ย ย Task
orย
Project
ย ย ย ย Taskย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Task
Patricia Cole, Ped is right, there are some limitations:
Task-based subitems of a task-based item (subtasks) cannot be converted into a project-based type.
Project-based items or folders with sub-projects or subfolders cannot be converted into task-based types.
Also, it can be that your access role restricts converting items. If that's not your case, please let us know, and I'll raise this with our Support team.ย

I am the owner of the account with an admin role. I am unable to convert any task. I have tested it multiple times and the function never appears. In the example I listed above, the task was a single task at the space level. It was not nested nor did it have subtasks.
Hey Patricia Cole, I've now raised this with our Support team ๐

Is this functionality currently broken?ย I don't see "Change item type" in the three dots menu.
Are there any plans to convert using a blueprint?
Sri Sukhi Hi! It should be working for sure. I've asked our Support team to look into this for you ๐
Malu Guillen Torres Hey ๐ย Could you please clarify - do you mean convert a blueprint to a regular task/project?ย ย

Hi Lisa!ย
ย Hi Lisa!
Basically, I want to be able to convert a Task into a Project using one of our Project Blueprints.ย
Currently, when I convert the Task to a Project, it only gives me the option to create it from blank, but I would love it if it could create it with the subtasks and statuses we have in our "new project blueprint".
ย
ย
ย
Lisa just checked again and there's no convert item type on the 3 dots menu:
Hi,ย
I also an unable to see this option, is it broken?
ย
Hey ๐ย
Apologies for the late reply!
Sri Sukhi I can see that you have an open ticket on this, our Support team will reach out to you.
Ashley Keating I've also raised a ticket for you as well, our team will help you.ย

Can a blueprint be added to this newly created project (from the previous task)?
