Do the "subitem status change" automations work for tasks that are subitems to a project?

I'm struggling mightily with getting automations to work in a specific location of one of my spaces. I'm looking at everything to try to figure out why.
If I have a project that has subtasks, should this automation work?

yes it works.
Make sure that tasks are all direct subitems of the project and not nested in folders or other projects or tasks, because this automation can read only task that are below project.
