Timeline report format
I would like to be able to create reports in timeline format. For example, I want to be able to flexibly, on the fly, select 4 projects to load into the timeline view, without having to create a new folder grouping them together. I'd also like to be able to sort/order projects loaded into the timeline view without having to change the name (adding a number). A timeline view is critical for reporting and communication, and I need to be able to populate and manipulate it as needed for a particular audience without changing/disrupting the core data structure in use by the teams.
Hi Casey, thanks for your suggestion - it's a good one!
A solution that may work is using the New Timeline view may come in helpful. Though you'll need to move the Folders around a little to capture what you want to see in the same place you can now custom sort tasks on the table or timeline.
Our Product Team is also working on some great updates for this view, including a Timeline Snapshot so you can share information in a Timeline format.
It would be great for you to review this option and if you have any feedback we have a dedicated post for this: Your Feedback - New Timeline.
I understand this is a little different to what you've suggested so thank you for sharing your idea here 👍
I agree with Casey's comment about keeping reporting separate from task management. If the Timeline was available in the reporting view it would make use of the more flexible selection options in the reporting section. The Timeline Snapshot will help task management but it is a workaround in terms of reporting.

Timeline reporting would be great. One use case we'd like to have:
There are a few key milestones in most of our projects, that line up across projects (for example, "Ship Product", "Start Manufacturing", etc.). Being able to consolidate all of these milestones for all of our projects into a single report would be hugely helpful. We've created a custom checkbox field to pick and choose these milestones, but we can only spit out the list report. Seeing them on a timeline would be much more intuitive.
@Gregg Completely understand! Do you think a calendar view would be helpful for your situation?

@Stephanie
Calendar view would certainly be useful. Also, something like the Timeline on MS Project would be great, or the summary/high-level timeline view you can get out of OnePager.
@Gregg That's great to hear! In that case, I recommend following Christine's post, we should have some exciting updates there soon!
