Timeline Sequence

I can set the Table in chronological order, but cannot get this done in the TimeLine Gantt Chart.

How do I get the Time Line to follow the sequence as the Table?

Hi Robert, thank you for posting this question! I noticed that the Support Team already sent you a reply in the ticket you opened, but I wanted to share the sorting logic here too, in case anyone else is looking for this information. Tasks on the Timeline View are positioned automatically:

  • Parent Folders and Projects are listed first and are sorted by the start date of their earliest task. Subfolders appear under their parents.
  • Tasks with dependencies are listed above standalone tasks.
  • All tasks and dependency chains are shown based on their earliest start date.
  • If multiple tasks start on the same date, the task with the shorter duration is listed first.
  • If multiple tasks or chains start and end on the same date, they are sorted alphanumerically.

Tasks change their position when they're rescheduled. Let me know if you have any questions about this, I'll be happy to help!

I find the the fact that "Tasks with dependencies are listed above standalone tasks" as really frustrating. It doesn't make any sense and throws my charts out of whack. As a result I often have to do away with dependencies entirely.

I AM AGREE WITH MY COLLEAGUES.

I will find really useful to be able to mantain the order of the activities as in the table.

Also a mixed view (table on the left / timeline on the right) yes just like Project :-)

Maybe some selection button on the upper part to activate theactivate the sortening by links or by table.

It would be nice , if timeline would have an option to choose - how to arrange the tiles (by title , by priority ,by importance - the same as in List mode). Also , if you could change the tiles position manually, so everything will be arranged according to dependencies .

Hi everyone, thanks for the additional comments here. The Timeline View is something our Product Managers are thinking about, so the details help. If you haven't already, please +1 the first post in this thread, we use that number to help track the popularity of different requests.

Hi yes the show tasks with dependencies first logic often means that earlier tasks appear underneath later tasks and then you can't move them.  It's crazy that one of your other customers above is having to remove dependencies to get the plan to appear OK.  Dependencies are a corner stone of project planning.  I can only hope that your  Product Managers have real world project management experience.  As it stands, this product looks like it wasn't designed for project management.

@Jane I apologize for the very delayed reply here. I've checked in with one of our Product Managers and they do want to improve the sorting logic. I can't share a concrete timeline at the moment, but it is something the team is thinking about and working on.

I have a large project and for an management/executive view it would be very nice to be able to drag and drop the folders/groups so that it visually makes more sense.  I also like the idea of swim lanes where I could group tasks by any segment but for example resources, it would be helpful to see in-house resources in a swim lane, pro services, contractors, etc.

Ideally, tasks would stay in the order we enter them (since we normally know the order things should be done) and then create dependencies in Timeline view. This would streamline date setting, as creating the dependency jumps the task backward in the timeline when a finish to start dependency is used. Therefore, we lose the date we manually enter (adjusting from default of today’s day) or have to navigate the alphabetical list (with default date of today) to link tasks that were entered in sequential order.

Maintaining the order of tasks as they were entered in list view on the timeline view would facilitate more efficient timeline development.  The manual process of fixing dates twice when creating dependencies is inconvenient, and the  alphabetical ordering on timeline view creates opportunity for error when adjusting timeframes.

Sorting tasks based on start date and duration does not sense for projects like ours where most tasks have Finish-to-Finish dependencies.

On the List view we sort tasks by Priority. That should be a sort option for the Timeline view, too. This could be a folder/project setting, so it doesn’t need to be an option selected when the timeline view displays.

Agree with Chet's note about having Priority be a sort option in Timeline view. I would add that Priority should be an editable field with a numeric value - not just a drag items in the List view.

The timeline view requires quite a bit of improvement. However, the new timeline (activated from the lab) is not doing a better job. As some of the people in this thread have suggested, having the option to dislay tasks and folders in your timeline based on alphabetical or chronological order should be accessible from the settings of the Timeline.

Once request that we have, is to also have the option to hide folder/projects in the timeline. This really creates a lot of noise for our project, specially if we have multiple folders that don't have any task at the moment. In this scenario, we would see the empty folder using up valuable space in the timeline.

Thanks!

Hi all, as Stephanie posted above, sorting logic is something our Product Teams are looking to enhance. The new Timeline view is an example of this, where some sorting is now available

This is a feature of Wrike Labs, so receiving your feedback on this is so valuable to our Product Team. They can review this feedback when discussing the next development steps, so please continue to post your thoughts here or send feedback here under the Timeline View option. Thanks to all who voted and who continue to bump this post!

Hello,

Additional feedback for the new timeline is having the ability to create our own filters (and have a filter manager to organize and name them). Please see the attached image for further clarification.

Also, the current Filter does not display the value stored in a "Custom Field". For example, I have a Custom Field named "Country", and the values stored (as a dropdown) is USA, Japan, Germany, Mexico. When I go into the Filters > Custom Field > Country, the only options I have is to manually type text and set it as "Contains, Starts With, Is Equal To......." But, I don't get a list from the custom field value I have already stored. We would love to see this option as a tick box, where you can specify if we want to include All, or just individual values. Excel does a good job with this.

Thanks!

Hi Anastasia,

You are welcome. I get a lot of questions from my team about how to filter tasks. Coming from JIRA (where it is one of the most basic and key features) we felt that this is missing and strongly confuses users.

One way we are able to "save" our personal filters is by creating a widget in a dashboard. However, this requires quite a long setup, and is not as easily accessible as the option I showed above.

Definitely makes sense, Nicolas. The Dashboard widget workaround is something that could potentially help other users, so thanks for sharing that with everyone here!

Nothing I can say will usefully add to the erudite and insightful comments above.  I'd love to see this worked on, not least because my colleagues are left puzzled why I can't reshape the Gantt chart  to reflect reality.  Thanks.

HI Robert, thanks for your input it's very useful for our Product Team.

The team would really benefit from having use cases too so it would be great to hear some of the filter options that would benefit you and your team 👍
