Dependencies - not auto-organising?
I have built a typical design process and have included dependencies (finish to start) so one stage should follow the next. My hope was if you move a stage or extend it, that the process would automatically re-organise - but isn't... am i doing something wrong?
Hi Matt! You can reschedule a whole dependency chain while preserving the scheduling gaps between tasks. To do this, convert one of the tasks in the chain into a milestone, and then drag and drop the milestone to a new date on the Timeline while holding "Shift". Some more useful tips about the Timeline can be found in our "Edit the Timeline View" post. Let me know if you have any other questions, I'll be happy to answer them!
@Matt keep in mind if you do this SHIFT + holding and moving a milestone trick, it will literally take all the tasks PRIOR to your milestone and move them forward also, not a useful feature if you are running a project and need to keep previous tasks where they are while moving current and future tasks forward. Should you need to move current and future tasks and you have milestones marking exit points from phases, you'll need to move the milestones by hand.
@Anastasia correct me if I'm misstating, see screenshot attached
@Imran, thank you for sharing, this is great! You're right, when you reschedule a Project by moving the milestone, all of the tasks in the dependency chain will be rescheduled. If only part of the Project needs to be shifted, I recommend removing one of the dependencies to break the chain into several segments. Then you can independently shift any segment which has a milestone in it, and if needed, recreate the dependencies when you're done. Hope this helps! :)
@Anastasia for a multiple milestone project with many dependencies that is not a feasible action to take (removing milestones/independently moving task groups). Do you know if anyone in the community forums or your product team has this in the works?
To summarize the feature suggestion is:
Summary: Bulk Moving Project Plan / Task Groups
Function:
Let me know if this is currently somewhere in Wrike, if not I can refine this 10 sec braindump and make a feature suggestion
Imran, thank you for the clarification and for sharing your use case! I can see how teams could benefit from this, and while it's not part of the current functionality, it would definitely be great to share this with our team (and discuss it with other users) by including it in our new Product Feedback section. We just launched it so users could share their suggestions and ideas, as well as upvote the existing requests they support :)
My ideal interface would be to SHIFT and select which tasks you want to move. Then drag them up or down the timeline.
Hi Antonia, thanks for commenting here! Just wanted to make sure I understood correctly: do you want to be able to select multiple tasks by holding the shift key, to move/reschedule them all at the same time on the Timeline?
Yes, that would be a great feature.
Hi! I was wondering if an enhancement request for Imran Selimkhanov's or Antonia Fredman's suggestions had been created. If so, I would love to thumbs up it and/or see what other feedback had been made/give on this subject.
Thanks!
Hi Deidra, here's Imran's feedback post on the above. Feel free to add to that request or just upvote it 🙂
