[Status: Not planned] How to mass edit and rename projects and tasks?

Hi, we use Wrike for new product development and I have created a template with sub-projects and tasks. We typically start off with a working name and then assign it a unique identifier later into the project. So the projects and tasks within this would need to be updated with the unique identifier. I would like to figure out a way to rename all of the tasks and projects but the only way I can think of doing this is duplicating the entire thing and then adding a prefix. Is there another way to do this?

All, please upvote this, so this can gain traction @Wrike! seems like the original post needs 60 votes to get on the board.

A quickfix could be to include the comments and descriptions in the exported excel file, so you don't loose these while mass editing in excel...?

Adding this feature would be extremely helpful! Our Client Success Manager works so hard to manage hundreds of tasks and projects that come through our request box daily, the feature would save her so much time. It would be awesome if we could make this happen!

We'd like to put our name in the hat for this feature as well.  Projects are started before the final name & number are designated for that product, but renaming every task prefix individually is not practical.  It would be great to be able to mass edit the prefix as others have mentioned.

Sad that this still hasn't been resolved. Mass editing prefixes and suffixes would be extremely helpful saving all of us precious time. Let's get to 60...

Glad to see it now has many votes - hoping we can get this implemented. Our team finds ourselves not putting the project into Wrike until a final name or at the very least some item number is created so that we don't have to manually edit each task. This however causes projects to be worked on outside of the system which definitely not ideal. 

Crossing my fingers that we can get a solution to this!

I agree, the ability to mass edit names or descriptions of tasks is DESPERATELY needed. If it's too complicated to build this functionality in the mass edit tool within the software, being able to update tasks/projects in a spreadsheet would make a huge impact on my team!!

 

Please please PLEASE build this, Wrike team!

I could really use this feature. So wanted to add to the thread.

In particular, I need to update 923 identically named tasks to have a new name. This is going to take me hours — it would be awesome to know if/when this can be on the product roadmap. I'd prefer to wait for feature release than to do this manually.

Hi Shane King,

Thank you for sharing your use case here. Are you changing these tasks to have the same name as well? If so, one workaround could be to open the project/folder that contains these tasks in the Table view, change the name of the first task, and then use mass editing to change all of the names to be the same.

I have added my vote. My organization needs this as well since we need to set up projects early and only determine the final "Title Prefix" until the project is well under way.  Currently, we use the double click every row in Table view and manually update method.   This is a painful, wasteful one time exercise.  Also, this condition perpetuates because every new task still has the original Title Prefix so we have to manually change every new row.  I am hoping that may be ignorance on our part.  Is it possible to update the Master Title Prefix so new tasks get the new prefix even if it's not possible to retro update the existing rows?

@... - thank you for the update.  I voted per your suggestion.  I understand it is not possible to update all existing prefixes at once.  I had a related question that is a little different: If I have already created a project with a prefix, can I change that prefix at the project level so any NEW tasks would use the new prefix?  My concern is if I manually update the existing prefixes, every new task will need to be manually updated as well....unless I can change the project level prefix setting.

It isn't possible for tasks to use the new prefix when you change the prefix at the project level. There's this Product Feedback post about new tasks taking prefixes, I would recommend adding your vote to this post as well.

I'm upvoting here as well, though I think this proposed solution distracts from the (my) root problem.

The need to search-and-replace, prefix, or otherwise mass-edit task names stems from the following shortcoming of Wrike: In dashboards, reports, etc., is it EXTREMELY difficult to tell what project a task is associated with. We end up with a dashboard full of tasks all called "Engineer Part" but are otherwise indistinguishable. We end up with a folder full of tasks for our field engineers called "Install" but they cant tell where in the country they need to go to install without really digging in.

We have project templates with 200 to 400 tasks. We have 40 - 50 projects ongoing at any given time. In order to distinguish between one project and another, we add a prefix to all task names when adding from blueprint as a workaround. This is an ok solution to help identify tasks, but perhaps a mouse-over or option to display the project name would make more sense?

In general, I take issue with not being able to identify the project. We can't group reports based on project either. "Folder or project" is not useful to me since we have folders within our large projects so the reports get all jacked up with subfolder names.

Seeing as this prefix is the only solution we have- If we're going to use a prefix to identify what project the task belongs to, then we need a way to change the prefix later. When projects are in the proposal phase, we need to evaluate resource availability in case we win the project so it must be entered in wrike. Once the project books, it gets a project number. Editing these tasks by hand is a royal (and I do mean royal) pain-in-the-task!

Again, I think if we can just quickly identify/sort/filter/group the PROJECT a task belongs to, the rest of this is just workaround.
