Hi Adam, yes you'll need to navigate to the Project Overview if you change Project in the Folder tree.
Special consideration was given to whether people wanted to see the Project or the Overview and it tipped in the way of the Folder view being more valuable to people at a glance.
It might make a good product Request on the Community if you'd like the option to change this. If you'd like I can convert this thread to Product Feedback section so people can vote for it? Let me know 👍
I vote for being able to have the folder/project overview default to being shown. Or better yet, have it be a pane that remembers being left on or off.
