Linking to company server

Hi,

before starting with Wrike we had a server in our company where all our projects are located. So some people still want to keep their documents on this server. I want to introduce Wrike slowly so the idea is to use Wrike as the central tool, but allo people to leave their documents in the old structure if they want (but to teach new people to use Wrike completely to achieve a slow movement to Wrike).

My problem now: how can I make a link to a folder on our server inside a task?

In Word documents I can copy the address and make this:

EVerybody with access to the location can open it and anybody without can not. That is acceptable.

How is similar possible in Wrike?

Some addition: I copied a link from a word file to Wrike. Then the link exists and you can click on it and then open it. Unfortunately the file (I treid it with an excelsheet) does not open, but Wrike offers to download it to the local drive.

So Wrike seems to be able to handle links to external files on a server but

1. how to put the link to Wrike without making it first in Word

2. how to not download but to open a file directly in the program (here Excel) from the link in Wrike?

Sven, I have seen this posted a couple of times over the years. My understanding is that since Wrike is really a web app, you cannot link directly to your local network storage. It would be like allowing an outside company full access to your network and somehow mapping the network paths. Alternatively, you can "add files" to your Wrike task if your share drive is using OneDrive or Sharepoint since then you can create web-based authentication.

We have the same issue and have yet to have a good work-around beyond just forcing folks to upload directly to the Wrike task.

Maybe someone else has figured something out...

Dear Nathan Jones, to add important files to Wrike is not allowed in our company due to security reasons. Also Onedrive and Sharepoint are not safe. The only safe alternative accepted from IT is our network folder which is mirrored each day and has a strict version control.

So I need a possibility to put the link to the network folder into Wrike, so that I can klick on it and it opens directly. Just passing the path there and everytime copy it to the explorer is not acceptable because if you calculate the time loss over your company by such unnecessary work it is realy wasting a lot of money.

I do not think your understanding is correct. Word and Excel (also the WebApps) are able to deal with such links. Just paste the path to Word and it generates a link automaticaly. If you open the link from the document and you do not have access to the path there you get an error message. So a standard procedure with apps.

So I would expect as Wrike is an App on my computer that it has the same functionality without problems.

Hi Sven. No, I understand why you want to and the benefit. I just do not think it's possible yet. I did a search and found the thread where this was also discussed. Looks like there might be a way but it has some limitations. And the Wrike team took it back to the product team. Hope that helps and good luck!

Couldn't use just use a API or ODBC to link to access the network path.  It isn't a security issue if the security for the server is set up to authenticate users accessing the path.
