Hi Jina Beery, welcome to the Community!

When you follow a task, you'll receive a notification when there are any changes to that task, but it won't appear in your My To-Do or any view that you have filtered to show only tasks that you're assigned to. Assigning yourself to a task allows you to see all of these notifications for changes, and it appears in any of these views as well.

Hope this helped! If you have any other questions let me know.
