I have been thinking about this as well. In theory, you should be about to roll up effort and subtract time logged, but I haven't tried that yet. I know there is functionality specific to the android app that is displaying the percentage of project completed, but I don't know what that is looking at. I can't wait for this to make it to the rest of the UI's!!!

I'm looking to do this exact same thing, but in a graphical report for the executive team. Something like below:
I think this webinar sheds some light around what you're looking to do, it's a basic approach but touches on calculated fields.
