Reordering tasks and folders in GANTT view

I have a project that has tasks and some folders of tasks. The folders do not represent a single task with subtasks, and they don't represent subprojects.

So I have them in a folder. I have two folders in the project, and about a dozen tasks.

I can move the tasks around by dragging, but I can't move the folders. They are at the bottom and not even ordered by name or start date.

What am I missing?

Hi Bruce, it's likely showing these Folders at the bottom because they're not scheduled (start and end date). It's hard to tell without seeing the set-up but can you try setting the start and end date. The Folders will fall above the relevant tasks it's associated with.

Let me know how that works for you and if you're still having an issue I'll raise with the Support Team to take a closer look 👍

Hi Stephen - I also cant seem to figure out the order for the folders. Its not by start date of tasks contained within it because I have moved older tasks into a newly created folder and it still lies at the bottom of the parent folder. Really need some help with this!

I am having the same problem--the folders in gantt view are not ordering themselves by date of task and cannot be reordered.  What is the solution?

Hi @Sheri, sorry for the long reply here!

There is no manual sorting for folders and projects on the Gannt chart at the moment, you can only drag and drop tasks. However, if you change the order your tasks are in in your Table View, it will change your Gannt chart. You can set them in ascending or descending order.

Hope this helped! Let me know if you have any questions!

This sorting of folder in the Gannt view is also important to me. I have named my folders alphabetically so that they appear in Table View in my desired order. However, the Gannt chart continues to order the folders by the date they were created, with the most recently created folder at the bottom of the chart. Has there been any added functionality here since Sep 2019?

Having the same issue--it makes the Gantt chart view nearly unusable.  Any updates?

Lisa Pardon me, but it seems I cannot drag&drop to reorder Folder rows (tested today in the web version, Firefox 88.0). Only the task could be reordered by drag&drop. The multi-dot icon on the folder row is not displayed.

Petr Zloty You're right, this only works for tasks currently.

Same here: I am trying to order the Projects manually in the Gantt chart view. Is there now a way to do this ? Note that they are displayed in the desired order in Table view, but I can't figure out in what order they are displayed in Gantt view, and I cannot change it. Any update appreciated.

Welcome to the Community Matthias Egger 👋

On the Gantt Chart view, there's a table part and the actual chart part. On the table part, you can click on any column's title to change the projects' order (by dates/assignees etc.).

You can also click this icon to add more columns and then order projects on the Gantt Chart using them:

Please let me know if that helps 🤗

I'm having the same issue.  I want to manually place folders where I want on the Gantt view.   This is a significant oversight on the UX team.  Moving items (drag and drop) should be consistent regardless of the type of item - folders, projects, tasks, sub-tasks, you name it.   If I can drag and drop one, I should be able to drag and drop any.

BTW, the UX team should also think about this:  Folders are just groups of tasks.  So if I want to manually place a group of tasks, why should that be any different than placing one task.  The outcome of that thought-experiment is to simply realize that moving items, regardless of item type, should be consistent.

Until this is fixed, the Gantt functionality is almost unusable except for very simple cascading events.

Thanks and keep us updated as to when this >>important<< request is prioritized and fixed.

There is no discernible logic to how it sorts the order folders, when you're in GANTT view. For awhile my GANTT chart seemed to be placing them in order of by when they were created. Then I clicked around the settings in table view, and now the folders are being sorted with some other logic. What on earth is going on?

I am having the same frustration with an inability to order folders.  as previously stated by others, this makes the GANTT chart almost unusable as an information visualization tool.  Have you developed a solution to this?
