Stop Automations from applying their automation to a main task's sub tasks
I love the automation function but it has a huge drawback because as far as I can see you cannot stop the automation from applying itself to all tasks in a folder including sub-tasks. This is really frustrating and makes the feature unusable for our company requirements. I have an automation to notify a person once a task in that folder turns to completed. Problem is that it also applies it to the sub tasks which has nothing to do with the person the automation is addressed to. Any way around this?
Hello Lize Loftie-Eaton, you can create a custom field that is filled only in the main task. Then, in the automation, just add a condition that checks if it is 'not empty' or 'Checked,' if it is a checkbox custom field.
João has an excellent point. Alternatively, Lize Loftie-Eaton you might want to build and use a Custom Item Type for the main task, and have regular tasks for its subtasks. That way, when building an automation, you can point it directly at the main tasks, while the subtasks will be unaffected. Make sure to check out this webinar on Custom Item Types that explains some of its benefits (skip to 9:10 to get straight to the point).

Thank you for the suggestions! Going to go try them right now :)
Hi Lize,
I'd additionally suggest not mentioning a specific person, but using @asignee instead.
