Recurring Subtasks

Hi,

I am trying to create a series of the same weekly tasks for a project with a set of subtasks that need to be completed. I have figured out how to make the main task recurring. But the subtasks under the main task do not carry over with the main task with the recurring. Is there a way to have them carry over or do I have to go into each recurring task after I have made them and make the subtasks ?

Thanks

Hi Kelly! Although subtasks aren't a part of task recurrences, I think that Project Duplication or Task Duplication will work perfectly for this use case. There are two ways to do this, depending on the structure of your Project:

  1. Create all the daily tasks with their subtasks for the week. For ease of organization, you can create them in a Subproject or Subfolder within the main Project. Once the first week is all set up, just right click on the Subproject you created them in and choose "Duplicate". This can be repeated for the required amount of weeks.
  2. If needed, you can duplicate on a per-task basis. To do this, create a task with subtasks, right click on the parent task in List View, and then choose "Duplicate".

Duplication is great because it allows you to carry over all of the main attributes, as well as easily edit them (e.g. reschedule and move tasks a week forward). You can create several Templates for different types of Projects, allowing you to get them up and running in minutes :)

Anastasia, We use this duplication feature all the time, but sometimes we get the end date wrong. Is there an easy way to shift due dates on all subtasks in a Project. I'm unsure of the Reschedule at the project level when the options are only: Today | Tomorrow | This Week | Next Week. That seems useless to me. When I'm planning something almost a year out and I'm off by two days. There's 23 subtasks I don't want to have to change for this particle project. Help.

Hi Micki, thank you for reaching out here! Have you had a chance to try out the Mass Editing functionality? It allows you to select multiple (or all) tasks from the List View, and shift their due dates by a certain amount of days:

Would this work for you? Happy to discuss this further! :)

Hi,

We use the duplication function a bit, for tasks that are recurring more ad hoc. However, the initial issue of having weekly  or monthly, or which ever frequency, recurring tasks, that are automatically duplicated including all sub-tasks, scheduled run-time etc. is not solved with duplication - this still has to be done manually, no?

It would be a great help if there could be a recurrancy function, that carried over more than just the main task and it's basic features.

Mads.

Hi there, thanks for sharing your input here and welcome to the Community 🙌

Yes, the duplication option is a more of a one-off action compared to creating multiple recurrences. I can understand for some teams, having subtasks recurring automatically is important so your feedback here is valuable. Just to ensure you're aware; if you want subtasks to be part of the recurrence they need to be tagged in the Folder or Project.

Any questions here let me know.

Why can't we shift the dates forward a whole year? We have hundreds of projects that occur on an annual basis and if I could just shift them forward 12 months and have them retain all the dependencies this would be ideal. Duplicating them is a huge pain and takes way to much time.

Hi Ashley, you can now reschedule tasks linked by a dependency by dragging and dropping tasks on the Timeline View. The tasks do have to be linked by a dependency chain for this to work though. Would that help with your use case?

Recurring subtasks would be hugely helpful in my organization as well.

We use master task with recurring tasks all the time.  Right now we have to just manually add the recurring task because the recurring function does not work with sub-tasks.  We would really love to have that featured added.

I would also like to see this implemented.  Asana offers this and after switching to Wrike I was surprised to see that this is a conscious exclusion.

I can't think of a reason I wouldn't want to copy the subtasks for a reoccurring task. Hoping this comes about soon!

Another vote for the only feature lacking in Wrike, reoccurring subtasks.    Spending way too much manually duplicating.

This is the #1 thing that is making me rethink leaving Asana.  We do so many recurring tasks that not having subtasks be recurring with the tasks is a real issue for us.
