Table view: 'grey out' fields that aren't applicable

I regularly work on my project plan in table view. I'll go through my plan often to make sure that all tasks have start/due dates and other details filled in. I often get thrown by blank fields looking like gaps (e.g. folders within my plan cannot have start/due dates so those fields are empty, making it look like part of my plan hasn't been scheduled, whereas in fact those fields will always be empty.

Could it be changed so that these sorts of fields (the ones that can't be used) appear differently - greyed out for example - so that the table view is easier to work with?

This would be helpful for custom item types too! Our project has set fields that are different from some of the custom item types we are using, so we have the same issues as Juliet when viewing table view - there are a bunch of blank cells. Having these greyed out would be awesome - but even better would be for us to have an option of whether or not to have them greyed out.

Ashley Fischer great point! I wonder if it's possible to have default (for users who don't want to have to pick and choose) but also the option to change the settings where you want to be more specific?

Juliet Bowpitt this would be perfect! Most likely the fields should always be greyed out, however having the option to change that would be great for the one off situations.

Adding my support for this feature.

We have created custom item types for Risks and Risk Mitigation Actions - each have different workflows and associated custom fields, but when viewing in a Table or Custom View to see the whole Risk Register then all Risk custom fields appear and are blank/ editable for Risk Mitigation Actions item type. Essentially, we want to be able to exclude custom fields from certain custom item types;

Hi Katie Whyte 👋

Thanks for supporting this suggestion! Currently, It’s not possible to exclude custom fields from certain custom item types in Table View. All custom fields added at the parent location will appear for all item types in Table View, even if they're not applicable.

You can hide fields in the item detail view using the Custom Item Type editor, and collapse the "More fields" section for a cleaner look. Table View filters can help you focus on relevant item types, but columns for all custom fields will still show.

I will share your feedback with our Product Team, and if there are any further updates, we will post them here in the Community.
