[Status: Backburner ⏳] Shorter Job Numbers or shortlinks

The option to display job numbers is helpful (especially for users used to working with other tools like JIRA)
however the numbers are rather long even if you don't have many projects / tasks yet.
I assume wrike uses a global id for all accounts?

It would be very helpful if you could start from zero.
(and use either an internal id just for the account or even better an id for each folder / project)

An alternative would be to generate a shortlink or provide the option to define a unique key for the folder / project which is easy to memorize if needed and which can be entered in the searchbox.

It's puzzling to me that after all the requests Wrike has received over time, you still have not implemented a solution.

Hey everyone, thank you for all of your continued feedback.

I understand how frustrating it can be to see a Community suggestion like this not be implemented into the product, especially one that has been on the Community as long as this one. We would love to implement every suggestion from the Community, but there are many reasons why this isn't the case. You can read more about the process here.

As soon as I have an update for you, I'll update this thread.

Hugh,

Thanks for the update.  In light of your comment and the fact that so many people have asked for this feature, it would be worth it to just tell us once and for all that this feature will likely never be added--and why.  At least we won't get any more frustrating updates that our feature requests are being dismissed.

On the other hand, would Wrike's development and customer service team host a live call to determine exactly how and why we would use such a feature?  Maybe they'd hear it from a different perspective and realize it's worth doing and not that difficult after all.

It's worth noting that other apps DO have this functionality, so it's not impossible!

This is a great system, which is fully and easily customizable:

If Wrike could add this feature, it would be unbeatable.

Thanks guys!

Jeff Hayes, couldn't agree more.  I even posted a question in the Dev section wondering if I could do this with the API, I need it so badly, but it is not going to be a simple solution.

https://help.wrike.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360042201693-Create-Custom-task-title-using-API-

@... thank you though for pushing along my related such request.

I just cannot get my team on board without this feature.  I develop software, and the lack of a readily visible Task ID is a real blocker.  Seeing it in Table view is insufficient, as we need it on the Board View.

Really would be nice if somebody at Wrike showed some appreciation for all these posts here and gave us a sensible answer to the chance of having this developed.

Hey @... and Lisa, I have just started using Forms and I noticed that they at least put the existing Task ID - with its fully 9 digits - into the task title.  This is just a thought, but as a temporary fix could Product look into adding that ability for all tasks to get automatically the Task ID in the title, via a setting in Wrike?  I assume this would be easier than solving this entire request since it's already doable if you submit via a form.

Just something to try to get this moving.  I'm guessing many of my colleagues here would be happy to have that I just explained as a stop-gap, vs. the current reality of no visibility of the Task ID in Board or List or on the Gantt or in Dashboards - I'm guessing the most commonly used views by most people in teams (and not Table where you can see the ID).

Thanks and hope you guys will consider!

Is there an algorithm that could convert the task ID into a job number that is shorter.

For instance ....

123 456 789 becomes AA789

123 456 790 becomes AA790

123 669 789 becomes AB789

234 456 790 becomes BA789

This of course presumes that we can increase 1 letter every 1,000 numbers BUT
i have every confidence that Wrike has more clever boffins than i who could build proper algorithms which enable letters/ characters to replace the earlier numbers. Just an idea. Others could innovate to a solution.

And again I add my support to this most simple, effective and productive idea.

Sadly I reckon it's in the too hard basket already and no amount of customers complaining will change a single thing.

These posts run back to 2017! I am trial testing now and our organization executes projects for many divisions. Having a 3 letter prefix for each project/task number would be incredibly helpful for indentification and searching purposes. The existing format (long unidentifiable numbers) is problematic.

Hi guys, I wanted to recommend a great tool I have been using called Project Buddy .  It creates a unique number for each Wrike task, and you can configure this to happen per Project!

Very reasonably priced, it has been working like a dream for me and really worth it, as this is one of the biggest issues for me in Wrike.

I had previously tried to figure out a way to get Integrate to do this for me, at huge cost, and even then it wasn't clear that was possible.

@... and Lisa I wanted to draw your attention to this. I'm not sure you'll appreciate me promoting a third party app, but this one can really give you guys some relief from the heat you are taking in this particular thread.

Thanks!

Hi everyone, we wanted to provide you with an update in relation to this.

While the Product team is still interested in this suggestion, they can’t fit it into their plans right now. Due to the fact that this will not be added to the short-term roadmap at the moment, we’ve updated the status of this thread from "Investigating" to "Backburner".

I understand that this will come as disappointing news, but please be assured that the team is continuing to listen to your feedback in relation to this. If there are any changes or updates, I'll be sure to update the thread.

If you have any questions or feedback, please do let me know.

Very disappointing about the demotion in status of this.  I have been trying for months to model Wrike into a proper Agile Software Development tool, and with out this that's next to impossible.  You guys seem serious about meeting this need though, just looking at your massive rebrand today and message from the CEO I saw on YouTube.  Also mystified at how difficult this could be for a team as large as Wrike has become.  ClickUp has all of 50 people and is cranking out features that are requested on here one after another - this one too, they have it "planned" and I'm guessing they'll get it done before you guys even get this back into "Investigating."

Thanks!

It is baffling why this feature is only now deemed worthy of being on the "backburner" after being ignored for over 3 years, and speaks volumes on how you prioritise your roadmap. We have wrike licences and are tied into a contract, however we have already decided that because of the system shortcomings, this one being a priority given it's so basic, we will not be renewing and will be going elsewhere. This is a staple of any task management tool and if you want to coax people away from tools such as Jira, you need to take this more seriously. There are many up and coming systems out there to give you a run for your money. If you can't master the basics and/or satisfy your customers when they request a relatively simple and important feature that should be standard, then you won't be competitive for long. Project plans in wrike are another bug bear but I won't bore the readers here with it's shortcomings. 😕

Couldn't agree more.  I also let me Wrike license lapse - this issue and several others that are amazingly ignored like ordering of comments, inability to promote a task to a project, no subtasks in boards (which really need some improvement speaking of replacing Jira Jo Green).  ClickUp in fact right now released this functionality, I have been testing ClickUp and it is really great to see this in action.  So my task now is numbered things like "IDEA-11"!!

Really a shame as Wrike has a ton of the basic structures in place, but most of the good stuff - like nesting Projects/Folders wherever you want, and tasks being able to go into any, was there from the beginning of the app.   The inability of Write to release much of any substance outside this basic structure for years has led me elsewhere, as there are a ton of other options that are iterating much faster and will ultimately offer 2x - 3x more than Wrike - and I might add without the hindrance of a yearly contract, and in many cases much more cheaply per license - Notion, Fibery, Hive ($12), etc.

This feature would be ideal for our lit codes that we put on published assets to identify segment, year of creation, unique ID & version number. We currently use a SharePoint list to manually create the codes & we track them in a custom field in Wrike, but would love a solution entirely within Wrike.

While I 100% agree this would be a great add on to have and use, I have come up with a fairly simple work around in the meantime.

Our team has adopted a method where we use a report within Wrike that is just a running list of all projects and sorted by name, we manually apply a sequential project # based off the last number found at the top of the list.  We had been managing # assignment outside of Wrike via excel but i wanted to find a streamlined and more effective way to migrate all into wrike.  It has been working great for us. We then use the prefix function to apply that # to all tasks within the given project

It is certainly not an ideal situation and automation and control within Wrike would be great, but its does give a solve for us for the time. We applied a visual que to tell difference between task and folder / project by using underscore for project / folder and then space - space for tasks.  By applying the #'s it does greatly help in quickly finding things in the search feature as well as with reporting / dashboards.

Example:

Project Name:  Q4 Promotion

With #:  2568_Q4 Promotion

Task Name:  Web Landing Page

With #:  2586 - Web Landing Page
