[From Wrike] Collaboration Just Got Easier! Introducing Rich Commenting and More
Sometimes how you say something is just as important as what you’re saying. Rich commenting is one of the most-requested features in the Community. And we’re happy to announce that it’s here!
Today, we’re releasing updates to Wrike’s comment stream that include a new rich commenting functionality. Along with these other updates, rich commenting will make conversations:
- Easier to understand
- More Organized
- Faster to use
So what’s did we add?
💰 Rich commenting!
Add the right formatting to comments: bold, strikethrough, and pre-formatted text and code (think Java, Ruby, etc.)
📣 @mention assignees and followers in tasks
Need to send a message to everyone assigned to a task/project, or update everyone following its progress? With new system groups, you can @mention all of a task’s or project’s assignees or followers and get your message out to the right people fast.
📋 Copy and paste images through the clipboard
Sometimes a picture is really worth a thousand words. Communicate more clearly by copying and pasting images right from your clipboard. No more having to attach files. Every. Single. Time.

Wait.... can I only add code to comments? Not descriptions? Please explain.
has the review function been updated to include side-by-side displays of the versions and comments, or the ability to export a review with comments? I'd love to see those features in Wrike.

@Noel Howell, it looks like descriptions have not changed. They have many formatting options, but do not include a way to insert `inline code` or ```preformatted text```. I would love to see full Markdown support in both descriptions and comments.

A nice feature! Second the need for full Markdown support in comments _and_ descriptions.
This is sweet.. I've been writing all my documentation in MD for years, so this feels more natural when I comment on tasks now.
Maybe a bit of a pipe dream idea here, but it would be beyond awesome to have a user-level setting to select which format is used for all inputs.. For example, "User A" could select MarkDown as their format, while "User B" could use a WYSIWYG input with it's toolbar; then each user would use their selected input method for every input, including task/project/folder descriptions and comments.
In the meantime though, this little hint of MD just makes me feel more at home in Wrike.. Thanks for that. :)
Thanks for adding this for comments but it would really be nice to also have an option for preformatted text in the task description.

I would love to see formatting like I see here in the comments... Why not use the same formatting standard as is used in the description field, making code formatting available in both?
I can see we can use a kind of 'wiki mark-up' now to at least add bold and italic, but I'm missing bullet points with proper indentation and formatting, inclusion of images, etc...
Also, could email messages that are sent and put into the comments be put in as pre-formatted text? Nicely crafted and formatted emails become quite hard to read when included in comments, as all formatting is lost.

It's a good start. Please keep going! Even like the editor, we are typing into here to comment on these community threads would be fantastic.
My team does not use the bold, itallic, etc. formatting in the comments as it's a bit of a pain to have to type the little format indicators. Would be easier if you could Ctrl-B or whatever, same as in Description. :D

Is it possible to add bullet points to comments?
On a Mac, use option + 8.
I'm not sure when using a PC keyboard.

@Claire, I've tested with PC too. I can only create a * symbol with the same function, but if you can figure out a Shift option please let us know.
Bullet points are not a supported format and it seems like it works on Mac as a Mac functionality with symbols not our own description field function. For me, I usually use a dash, -, to make bullet points in the comment section or use numbering in the format.

I've learned that the keyboard shortcut for PC is alt + 0149. You have to use the keypad on the right for it to work. It should work in other programs such as slack too. - https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-type-in-a-bullet
Great find! Obviously, +0149 seems like such a long 'shortcut' but at least it's possible🙂
I've passed this onto the Product Team and hopefully, they can create a shorter-cut in the future.

I'm coming back to this one today because I've just finished configuring two-way sync between our corporate Wrike and GitLab profiles. I'm currently still in the testing phase of this little endeavour, but I want to reiterate my request from back in February this year: please can we have Markdown support for task descriptions and comments?

Well actually, after digging through a few more of the synchronised tasks, it seems the "rich formatting" for comments is also not being applied correctly...
I have GitLab comments that contain code blocks, which are wrapped with the same three backticks as used in Wrike for "preformatted text", and others with inline code using the same single backticks, but instead I just get the entire comment translated to Wrike with no formatting at all, not even new line characters.

I support this is something I should log as a separate bug report though?
Or could we just have MD support and be done with it? *hint hint, nudge nudge*

It seems like the text formatting issues I'm experiencing come from a step in the sync process that's controlled by Unito's systems.. I did send them a support request earlier this morning and am currently waiting for their response, so when I have an answer to my queries, I'll drop a note here for reference.

Now our team needs to be able to disable auto-reformatting by Wrike. The designers are pasting links to a local server so that others in the project can pick up our files if needed (we'd rather not try to attach 1GB zip files in Wrike). However, some of the folder names have underscores, and when we paste the file path, Wrike automatically removes pairs of underscores and replaces everything between them with italic text. So no one can copy the file path and find the files on the server. This is really becoming an issue.
Michelle Elston, I believe wrapping the URL in single backticks will prevent the formatting behaviour.. That's second nature for me already thanks to my love of Markdown, but I've never had the issue that you described.
We would love the option to enable the more robust formatting that is already used in Task Descriptions. Maybe not all of those features, but at a bare minimum using ordered/unordered lists and indent/unindent. Most times we have feedback/conversation that needs to be more easily organized without the drawbacks of manual formatting.
Other systems like Asana and Basecamp allow more advanced formatting for comments, so I would only hope that a more expensive system like Wrike would equal that functionality. It's honestly disappointing.
