Task duration > 3 years

Currently it seems there is a maximum task duration of 3 years.

We would like to use tasks to track service contract expiry which could potentially be up to 5 years.

I think a Reminder could be useful, because a contract is not a task... One task could lost in the sea of activities, believe me a reminder will be more useful... I have reminders for contracts, innvoices, and another things involved in the administration of the building

Hi Carl and Alfredo, thanks for posting here! @Carl, I'm interested in learning a bit more about your use case here. As a best practice, we recommend creating tasks with duration for actionable items, but you can definitely link backlogged tasks or links (such as contracts and invoices) to these actionable items, which sounds like something @Alfredo may be doing too. Happy to hear more about your workflow and help with any suggestions about this!

Thanks for the responses Alfredo & Anastasia,

Appreciate the suggestion for the reminder. However in this case we want to use the benefits that the tasks provide, specifically ability to log notes against a task as well as use the timeline-view to compare expiry of multiple contracts (tasks).

The use case is typically this:

1) We have a number of customers and each customer will have one or more service contracts.

2) Each service contract has a specific starting time and a specific end time - set as the task start date and end date.

3) Each service contract covers a set number of Serial Numbers which we enter into the description area.

4) This allows us to complete our two required uses cases:

 - Get a S/N and use the task search field to find which service contract it is covered under

 - Look at all service contracts across all of our customers and use the timeline view to find out whats coming up to an end soon (can achieve similar with reports and cut off dates but the timeline view is a great way of visualising it on a long term scale).

Carl, thanks for sharing your use case! This is definitely a unique workflow, and I appreciate the insight your provided here, it's really helpful to learn about how different teams use Wrike.

Our organization also requires the ability to create tasks with duration greater than three years. These are not project phases but ongoing tasks such as processing program applications. This task lasts a little over three years and as we do not know when individual applications will be submitted it is not possible to break this task into small portions.

One of our use cases for Wrike is to visualize project timelines to include in project proposals. That means setting a reminder to extend the task later is not an option as we need to visualize the entire project in its entirety for our clients upfront.

If a hard limit to task duration is required based on how Wrike software operates, in our case a maximum task duration of six years would be more appropriate.

We also face this issue of maximum duration of tasks. In research and development it could also be help to have task span several years in order to easily see the subtasks and updates related to the task.

We are creating our project road map for our 4-year strategic plan. A handful of the projects are planed to last all four years. This limitation will require us to use a different tool.

Wrike was good for us when we started using it. However, the tool has not grown with us. We are quickly outgrowing it. I share this as feedback rather than negativity. I am disappointed only because the Wrike was such a vast improvement over Smartsheet for us.

Daniel, if you're outgrowing Wrike, what is it you're considering moving to?
Interested why no-one has suggested projects. Do they have 3 year limit too?

There also seems to possibly be an issue here of some of you guys maybe needing to just use a separate design tool for client facing visualising of contracts. Wrike is for your team more than your clients. I think a task is only a task of you're actually actively working on it between start and end dates, spending generally at least 20% of your time on it. (I wouldn't have more than 5 concurrent tasks on my plate; I would get tasks finished, then move onto the next) so Projects could be better, or Milestones with dependencies would look nice in Gannt?
