Gantt Chart
We facilitate/manage a Leadership Development series that is broken down into 10 months. For context purposes, we host the series on a cadence for, for example the '3rd Wednesday of Every Month'. We've been trying to use dependencies and the Gant Chart to program the monthly project, with a milestone date, so that when we submit a request form, the milestone dates align with each monthly 'training'. What we're finding is that the dates change (because the cadence is weird) when we submit a request (which aligns with the due date) AND when we go change the milestone date to reflect the actual training date, it doesn't change the predecessor task dates.
Did you try lead time for the predecessors of the milestone? That should drag the previous tasks forward. Lead and Lag Time in Task Dependencies – Wrike Help Center
Try dragging the milestone to the date you desire. Otherwise you need to drag one of the other tasks. Good luck!
When dragging the milestone to the date desired, be sure to hold down the shift key so other dates / milestones will change.
You have a FS dependency in your plan. So for sure the peredecessor will not change if you cahnge the milestone. It will give you a conflict when you shift the milestone to an eralier date. You need a SF dependency in the predecessor. You want to trace backwards to find ethe correct dates for the tasks to start, so the In milestone does not have any dependeny in the Gantt table part written, but all the task have a depenedency to their succesor.
In your examples: Task 3: SF4, Task 4: SF5, ... Task 6: FS7
I agree with others, you need to drag milestone and also use predecessor/successor based on milestone.
You can add or remove days as suggested by Anna Wallace
Hi Haley,
I encountered a similar issue with milestone tasks. To solve, I ended up creating a task workflow called "milestone task not yet started" and "milestone task completed" and making it another color. This way the significance of the milestone is captured but the tasks have the same flexibility as other tasks. To be honest, I haven't had much luck with the milestone task functionality. Hope this helps!
Agree with the recommendations above - and also check to make sure that there are no inherent start constraints (you can toggle that column on the settings wheel) to ensure there are none when you configure you plan
Thank you for asking this question and all the responses! I have been considering a similar endeavor for an ongoing delivery we offer and this is spotting a problem before I would've probably experienced it!
Thank you ALL so much for your responses! I think Sven Passinger's SF dependency recommendation, coupled with Anna Wallace's lead time recommendation, will hopefully fix the issue! I will also ensure that there aren't any time constraints. This has been so so helpful - we've been trying to figure it out for quite a while. I really appreciate this community!
Anna Wallace Kevin Thalacker Shelly Erickson Sven Passinger Ben Thomas Sherrie Besecker thank you very much for helping Haley Burns with this!
Great work, Community 💪!
