Sort Tasks by Folder and Project

Hello,

I have a lot of tasks filed under several different folders and projects.  I would like to see a sorting option in the basic task list view that sorts tasks by their respective folders and projects, so that I can see all of my tasks at a glance organized accordingly.

While I understand that this can be essentially done in table view with the drop downs, what I'm requesting would apply directly to the list view and I can imagine it looking similar to sorting by status or date with each group being represented respectively.  This would also be helpful for visual thinkers like myself who would like to see all of the tasks grouped by the project or folder color (I am referring to the current task view, not the update in Wrike Labs which got rid of project and folder tags visibility for some reason).

Hi Nicholas, thanks for sharing this idea here, I think this sounds useful. Just to make sure I got that right, you would like to see this sorting option in this dropdown, correct?

Hi Anastasia,

That is correct.  This way I could easily cross-reference various tasks that apply to multiple folders and/or projects, and pinpoint the tasks that are crucial for what I need in any particular moment.

Would like to see this feature added also.  I am running a large program (created a folder) that is cross-functional (created projects).  Each cross-functional team has several projects underneath (created as folders).  When I run a program review, I would like to run through overdue projects, projects due this week etc.  It will be very useful to sort the tasks by project so we can maintain focus on one project at a time when we work with dashboards.

I probably realize there are so many different ways to set this up.  Any other ideas are welcome as well.

This is also super important for us. We are considering a switch from Asana and a feature like this is critical for us. The list view right now should have a bunch of functionality added to it that only exists on the table view.

I would like this feature mainly in order to rescue tasks that have been created in the root directory rather than in a folder

Actually - I can see Table view > Collapse all easily finds tasks which aren't in any folder

This idea was suggested already 2 years ago, and we are still waiting to get a "sort by folder/project" option in the list 🙁

We also need this. You can see things sorted by folder in Gantt view. But, Gantt view doesn't have a priority sort. So, it would be nice to get a folder sort option in the list view here same as getting a priority sort in the Gantt view.

We also need this feature, just to get a full visual overview of everything within certain folders.

This is almost 3 years old. Any chance this is on the roadmap? Without this feature, dashboard and list view are very cumbersome to look at when you have tasks across multiple folders and projects.

Agreed with Sam — this is a major issue that I've also documented at length here: https://help.wrike.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360038214574-Task-Sort-Order-By-Folder-Project-or-even-Space

How is this not a thing in Wrike? You guys have the organization for the work as we build our spaces and projects, why can't we then use that information and hierarchy as a sorting tool? It seems completely illogical.

Hi Lisa — do you guys combine upvotes? Because it seems to me that this feature has been requested in multiple places throughout the community, absolutely totaling 60 votes or more. This is an obvious lack of functionality in Wrike and based on your own guidelines for upvotes, this general functionality should be heavily prioritized.

We're talking about ****103 votes**** here that are all based around the concept of sorting tasks by project.

This is a critical piece of functionality that is lacking in Wrike and present in literally every other PM software that I've tested. Unfortunately, because of that commonality we took it for granted that wrike would have it too and never tested against it during our trial.

Hi Lisa — awaiting your response RE: the 60 upvotes and the fact that this request has at least 103 votes across various threads.

This is such a major piece of functionality that we need and expect. Your competitors have this as such a core piece of functionality, it's astonishing that I have to spend so much time documenting and requesting this across your forums.

Hi Ed Adams, thanks for your patience here.

The reason that this thread doesn't have a status yet, is that our Product team takes each thread as its own individual request and provides a status once that thread reaches 60+ upvotes. In most instances, each idea and subsequent thread has its own set of requirements and intricacies and this is why they are treated individually. In relation to this thread and your suggestion here, we agree that these ideas are similar and have added the the 'Not Planned' status to your post also.

We spoke to our Product team in relation to this functionality and they have confirmed that it is currently not planned for List View, Table View, Board View, Gantt Chart, or Reports.

I understand that it's frustrating to see that this functionality has not been implemented when it has been requested. While we'd love to implement every suggestion our users make for Wrike, unfortunately this isn't possible. Sometimes what one person asks for conflicts with what someone else needs. Sometimes it's just not the right time, or, as amazing as a request is, sometimes other requests must take priority. Please rest assured that all of your feedback is being passed on to the team and is a part of their conversation when discussing the product roadmap going forward.

If you have any other feedback or questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Hi there, I would kindly ask why is it neccessary to have a hugh amount of voters? The missing sort-function is in my opinion a bug. The implementation is not a new feature, it is healing a bug.

We are a 100% project-company. We need experienced sorting and filtering options - or we might use another tool....

Hi Sven Zablowsky,

When a post reaches 60 upvotes, the Product team provides the thread with a status update. This allows the Community to quickly see which stage an idea is in, and whether or not it is on the roadmap.

While votes give the team an idea of the Community's interest in a suggestion, they are not the exclusive factor in how future updates are planned in Wrike. There are other factors that are taken into consideration, such as other priorities, or the possibility that adding functionality would weigh down the workspace.

I've passed on your feedback to the team. If there is any new information, I'll be sure to share it here.

Our organization also manages everything by project, and folders are used in very different ways across the various project types we handle, so sorting by folder has no value to us. I know the ability to group by "Project or Folder" already exists in reports, we just want to be able to sort by just "Project" and specifically NOT folders. Can that be broken up into separate options?

Hey Justin Fuller and everyone! Our team is currently working on the feature in the New Table view that will allow grouping by location. Would that be helpful?

Thanks for the update, Lisa. What does location mean? Just the folder where the task is located? Or the project that a task ladders up to?

Justin Fuller It could be both - a project or a folder 🙂

This sounds like it could be helpful. If it's in table view and you want to group tasks by project, would folders still display? Because the current table view always shows the top-most parent folders for the current view, even if they are not relevant to the current filters.

I recently saw you can actually turn off parent items that don't match filters, and it does get rid of most irrelevant folders, but it still shows all folder names for at least the next level down, but grouping solely by project is the desired result. For instance:

Project 1
--Folder 1
----Task 1
--Folder 2
----Task 2
Project 2
--Folder 3
----Task 3

Would become:

Project 1
----Task 1
----Task 2
Project 2
----Task 3

Hi everyone! We have just released some new features for the New Table view - grouping and the ability to show tasks in a single list. Could you please check out the new functionality and let me know if it helps for your use case?

Looks great! The "Single list of tasks" is exactly what I was looking for, but I don't see the option to group by Project though. I only see custom fields, which we've done this as a workaround by making a custom field called project and manually assigning the same value to all tasks with a project. This isn't automatic though, so it's becoming a pain to keep it up to date. Having it group by project automatically would let us make reports like a list of all milestones grouped by project—regardless of which folder those milestones are in—so long as they match the filer criteria.

Thanks! For the grouping, only some custom fields seem to show. Is there a method for determining which custom fields can be used for grouping?

0

Justin Fuller It's possible to group by the fields enabled in a particular view (through the "Fields" menu). So if you have a field (= column) visible in the view, it should be possible to group by it.
