Make Gantt View usable and more effective

The Gantt chart has some drawbacks compared to other programs gantt charts.

  1. Gantt can zoom horizontal (in time), but it needs also a vertical zooming (then making the written part smaller). We have huge projects with hundreds of tasks and only seeing about 25 of them on the screen gives no overview. In general have a look on zoom capability of pdf files. That is very good to zoom out, get an overview and zoom in again for details very fast. Unfortunately exporting the gantt everytime to pdf (as we have to do today) is no good solution for a working environment.
  2. Make exporting pdf more simple. Today it is interrupting workflow with clicking: three dots (click 1), export pdf (click 2), it saves to the local filestorage, open the pdf by hand (click 3). Why not just a export pdf (a pdf symbol) beside the three dots (or a shortcut) which automatically exports as pdf and opens the pdf in standard pdf viewer. That would reduce work very much.
  3. The font size should be adjustable (just as in Excel, perhaps not for every field, even if that would be great, but at least for the whole table part). The same also for the other views like table and list.
  4. please include the calendar week numbers in the date rows. Calender weeks are standard communication of timeframes in Europe industry. At the moment we have th dates in Wrike and then have to use Outlook calendar to have a look whcih week it is. Really boring. In the workload you tried it (even did not finish it, but you started).
  5. Names of subtasks are indented. If you have a fourth task level (or even more) (which can be very fast for a large and structured project: Level 1: project, level 2 Milestone, Level 3: task, Level 4: subtask) names of the tasks are indented more and more. Please make a possibility to configure the indention by user (to make it smaller in large projects).
  6. the ordering by manual order in Gantt is very helpful. Please introduce this also in table view (at the moment we do not use table view, but instead Gantt, even if we do not need the bars on the right because of this reason)
  7. the border between the table on the left of Gantt and the bars on the right can not be positioned completly free. Why??? In some situations we would like to make the bars as small as possible to see whole table on left and we can not as it it seems restricted to 50% of screensize. Give control to user and do not tell him how he has to work.

So our main problems with Gantt to work efficient.

Best

Sven

I completely agree that there are big opportunities for improvements on the Gantt chart.

I'm a fond supporter of tools like "OnePagerPro" as an add in to Project - that tool is incredible and adds huge power to what can be done with a Gantt chart.  I recommend your team review this tool for some ideas.

My most recent complaints about the Gantt view is that I can't hide the summary task and project summary line bar charts at my discretion.  I often don't need to see the summary rollup bar and only want to see the sub-tasks.

I would also like an option where you optimize (reduce) the extra horizontal white space between tasks.  Exporting or taking a screen shot of a Gantt view and trying to get in into a presentation or email is difficult because of the wasted space.

I want the ability to drag and move some task on the same row as other tasks when they are related.

I want the ability to change the color of the bar and formatting of the text for each task independently

I want the ability to change the displayed name of a task on the Gantt chart - could be different from the actual task name.  Sometimes we use longer text to describe a task in the project, but when I shot it in Gantt view I may want to show it in a shorter form.

Hello Chip Linthicum Jr, thank you for your detailed feedback, I have shared it with our Product Development Team. Regarding the option to reschedule interconnected tasks by drag-and-drop, you can use the option to shift a dependency chain, here are the instructions on how to achieve this.

And about the possibility to change the color of the bars representing the tasks, this property depends on the task status, therefore, you can create a custom workflow and select the colors of your preference to then apply it to the relevant tasks. You can find more information about this option here.

I hope you'll find this information helpful. Please, let me know if I can help with anything else 🙂
