Hi Tom, thanks for posting! :)
Item roll up is used when the items within a parent task/Project either doesn't have subtasks/subprojects/tasks or you don't need to roll up dates from them. Branch roll up on the other hand is used when the parent task/Project has subtasks/subprojects/tasks and you want to roll up dates from them.
Let me explain using a simple example:
Item roll up: You have a Project, it has Tasks, they have Subtasks. When you right-click the Project and select “item roll up” only the Project’s dates change based on its children’s dates.
Branch roll up: when you right-click the same Project mentioned above but select “branch roll up” then the dates of Tasks will change first based on their Subtasks’ dates, and only then the Project’s dates will change based on the now changed tasks.

Are you looking to use this feature? It would be great to hear what you're looking to achieve? More than happy to discuss here 👍

Hi Lisa

is there any news on making the roll up dates feature something that can remain "on" essentially we keep running into reporting problems because the task dates are changed but its not automatically adjusted at the higher project level.

@Claire Hi, sorry it took a while to respond. Item Roll up and Branch Roll up are Gantt Chart features. Can you please explain in more detail how changing the dates influence reports? Because normally, each time you open or refresh your report, it automatically updates to include up-to-date data. Please let me know if you's like me to raise a Support ticket for you 👍

Hi Lisa!

Pardon my ignorance, but why would you ever want to use the Item roll-up if branch roll-up updates all summary tasks and project dates? Is this just so that you don't have to use brand roll-up at the project level?

Thank you for your help and hope to hear from you soon!

Hi @Wynn, thank you for reaching out 🙂

There might be different use-cases, and someone might want to only roll-up the parent project's dates, and not the whole branch. Does that make sense?

Lisa: you respond: "Because normally, each time you open or refresh your report, it automatically updates to include up-to-date data." - that is not the case - when changing the duration of sub-tasks, the duration of the main task is not automatically updated. Meaning: if we are delayed on a subtask, then thsi will not show anywhere, and if next tasks are set to start from the main task and not the subtask, then we will not see the delay until too late. This links to the question to whether you can leave the feature "on"? In my view, it should always update parent tasks.

Hi Torben Søgaard Schaltz 🙂 I was actually talking about Reports in that reply.

By default, start and end dates for all items are independent. For example, if you have a task with subtasks - the task and its subtasks can have different dates (they are not automatically aligned). The same holds true for project dates and the dates of tasks within it. From the Gantt Chart, you can roll up dates. Rolling up dates means that a top-level item’s dates are based on the dates of items within it. Currently, it's not possible to leave it "on".
