due dates for workflow status

We would really like to have a due date option for any new status / stage created in a workflow. Currently the only due dates you can set are if you set it to an approval. All of our steps are not "approvals" so from a compliance standpoint we cant have it saying "approval".  the only way to do it now is to have a main workflow and then tasks/subtasks with their own dates which is high duplicative and cumbersome.  It seems like a functionality that already exists, it just needs to be offered without an approval linked to it.

Yessss!!!  Same use case with approvals.  We've added a custom field for status due dates but it creates clutter.
