Bu default, subtasks seem to appear in a completely random top-to-bottom order on the Gantt chart. Am I doing something wrong? It's annoying to have to drag and re-order them every time, so earlier tasks appear at the top and later tasks appear at the bottom.

It depends on what your sort order is. You can change your sort order, it may also help to sort by title and if you have the tasks numbered in the order they get completed in. Once you have everything organized you can then remove the numbers.

Is the default sort order on the Gantt Chart not the same as the default sort order on List View?
@Claire I'm sorry, there is not sort order in Gantt Chart, you can however use cascade sorting.
