Sort tasks by folder, rather than creation date, in Calendar view

Our teams rely heavily on the Calendar view to monitor tasks scheduled throughout the day, every day.

Since we can’t assign times to tasks (only dates), it’s difficult to view tasks in the order of when they’re due in the Calendar view.

Our workaround has been to create multiple folders with corresponding calendars by time slot. This hasn't been effective, though, because when we layer calendars to view multiple time slots at once, tasks show up out of order.

According to Wrike Support, the current sorting logic for tasks that have the same start date is:
- Longer tasks appear before shorter ones.
- Tasks with the same duration are sorted by creation date: newer tasks appear at the bottom.
- If creation date is the same, then tasks are sorted by ID: tasks with higher ID appear below.

I'd like to request a change in the logic, so tasks can be sorted by folder instead of by creation date.

This would solve our problem of getting tasks to appear in the correct order in the Calendar view.

I really like this idea, Ted. The team will review it when researching possible enhancements to the Calendar. Once I have any info I'll be sure to keep you updated 👍

Stephen, thank you so much for helping push this. This would be game-changing for us. I will say, if sorting by folder name isn't a possibility, then sorting alphabetically by task name, or sorting manually would also be great alternatives. Thanks again!

hey @ted have you found any solves in the meantime? Our social team wants to use the calendar function for social posts and need to sort by time of day being posted. They are super concerned about this. LMK if you have a hack. thanks!

@Nicole, we tried a few different workarounds. For example, we even pre-built blank tasks as placeholders in advance, so they would appear in the correct order on the calendars. Alas, this didn't work, because if we ever needed to change the order or add a new slot, it made all of that upfront work obsolete, since the tasks are sorted by date created in the "calendar" view.

For tasks that we need to see in chronological order, we've abandoned the "calendar" view entirely, and reverted to using the "report" or "dashboard" views in Wrike. We put a timestamp as a prefix in the task title (e.g. "08:45 Task Name"), and sort by title. While it's not optimal because it's not in the "calendar" view, this has served as a workaround to help us communicate these sorts of tasks in chronological order.

Still, it would be awesome if the sorting rules for tasks in calendars were consistent with that of reports and dashboards.

Hey everyone, I've looked into this suggestion and this is currently not on the Product roadmap. All of your feedback has been passed on to the Product team and I'll keep you posted on any updates. If you need anything else let me know and I'll be happy to help 👍

It would be really helpful to be able to sort that tasks on the calendar by using the same kind of element that the dashboards have where you can sort by end date, title etc. I even hope they extend that to include custom fields too but for now just being able to sort the filtered content on the calendar by title would make a huge difference.

Hi everyone,
great idea!! We are using the “content operations” template for our content planning and have also sorting problems in it. So a sorting by folder / project instead of a sorting by creation date would be extremely helpful!

We are new to Wrike - but have made great use of it since the start of the year. The one area we struggle with is the Calendar. We wanted to create a staff calendar that everyone could have access to - which would function similarly to Outlook (showing when staff is in, on travel, PTO, etc.).  This would help in being able to assign people to tasks and projects. Our developer created a work-around - but all of the calendar dates are tasks for each individual. That creates some issues in the analyze board display - and also in creating PDFs that can be easily shared. The problem is exacerbated when calendar events span multiple days. Happy to provide more detail if needed - but the calendar display is the one area that has caused consternation internally.
