Moving a task up and down on the table view

Hi - how do you move a task up and down on the table view? I can do it on the list view and gantt chart but not the table view.

Hi Leila! You can sort by field attributes on the Table View, but there's no way to manually drag and drop tasks into a different order. We have a request for this on the forums though and it would be fantastic to have you upvote the request. Just click the ➕sign to add your vote!

Did the vote pass? Can you move tasks into a different order?

Hi Lea Labastida, welcome to the Community 👋

If you choose to sort tasks by priority, you'll be able to drag and drop them on the Table View 😊 You can read more about it in this Knowledge Base article

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Is there any update on the ability to drag/move a task up or down? When I move a task to a new parent task, it puts the task at the top. How do I move that task to the correct line I want it on?

Hi Scott Graves, welcome to the Community 👋

When Table view is sorted by Priority, you can drag and drop tasks vertically. You can find more info about it in this Knowledge Base article, and please let me know if you have any further questions 🙂

Hi Lisa, it does not appear Wrike works this way; there is no Priority field. I was previously dragging and dropping tasks in the Table View, and it stopped working - I don't know how, it was like a switch was turned off. Now it only sorts by one of the column options, and I can no longer drag and drop.

How do I remove sorting options, so it's not sorted automatically at all?

Hi Philip DeLuca, welcome to the Community 👋

Can you please check if this field is available on your Table view?

It says "Priority" for me because that's the sorting option I chose, but it can be different depending on the sorting option:

Hi Lisa and happy new year!

I checked before I posted, and again just now - there is no Priority field to add. I can try to grab the long list of fields presented when I add a new column.

I created my own priority field for now, and can sort by it but reordering tasks in the table is still not possible (though I can move between parents, albeit slowly because Wrike makes dragging hard, too).

Let's say I want to make a widget and there are five steps to it. I entered the tasks in a particular order, but later associated predecessors that result in #5 being the first task in the order. I want to move #5 to the top of the parent list, and there is no way without either changing the name or adding priorities like "P0.1, P0.2, etc.). The feature has the priority, and I don't want to create what would be about 15 sub-priorities in the field I created. Wrike only sorts by one field at a time, not, for example, sort by my priority field then by a second field like "effort," which is also very limiting but is off-topic here.

This is the first time I've encountered this problem in project management software, ever.

The result is a hard-to-follow mess in the table view, and I hope my attachment comes through:

If it doesn't, I'll recreate it in a table here.

And just to be clear, Lisa, I know Wrike will sort by predecessors in the Gantt view, but that is really bad for editing (it displays different information in the task dialog...), and I've always had the ability to make the table view mirror the Gantt view order. Smartsheets does this, for example, as do Airtable, Project, and a couple of others.

Sorry to maybe sound a bit harsh but I am a wrike user for me and my team since 2 months now. If I knew about this limitation I would have never ever licensed Wrike. Also seeing that this issue already exists since 6 years without being solved even though it is so cruical makes me consider if we should change the tool soon.

In a complex software project this is a must have tool and it drives me nuts every day. I cannot understand how to release a software like that and then obviously ignoring the needs of your customers since 6 years.

Please excuse my drastically sounding message but this is just a No Go.

Hi Daniel Wurzberger, welcome to the forums, we're happy to have you!

It's definitely possible to drag and reorder tasks on the Table view: change the sorting to "Priority" and use the controls to the left of the task name to change their order. Wrike will remember the new order you apply:
