Adding approval to automation actions

Hi all,

It would be great if in automation rule setup, there was an action for adding an approver.

For one of our processes that we are trying to transfer over to Wrike, there is always the same approver involved, so it would be great if we could do something like: "When a new item is created --> add XYZ approver".

This would be especially helpful in situations where we need certain items to be reviewed by upper management (so another rule could be "When an item reaches the XYZ status --> add XYZ approvers").

While it's great that we have some options for approvals at the trigger and condition levels, it's still missing at the action level.

You could potentially add the approval to the workflow as the first step of the workflow, maybe call it "approval". This way all new submissions would start with this status, and the approver would be automatically assigned. You can even assign approval due dates.

Hi Ashley Fischer, thanks for the idea!

I actually tried this yesterday. The situation I was in was the following:

  • We have a new external request form for our end users to apply for an assessment
  • I set up, on the RF, a few assignees from the respective team that handles partnerships + an approver from IT
  • I set up an automation to trigger an auto-comment when a form is submitted and a task was created: it alerts/tags @approvers and @assignees to let them know that a new request is in and provide info to both groups as the instruction varies
  • The issue I faced was the timing of assignment, which I noticed in the activity stream
  1. Wrike Bot creates the task and automatically adds the assignees + reschedules
  2. The auto-comment triggered, but the @approvers tag wasn't active (aka it didn't tag anyone)
  3. The approver from the RF settings was added

I then removed the approver from the RF settings and did exactly what you suggested which was to add the approver at the first status (via workflows). Retested and the same order fired... meaning the approver doesn't get the comment/notification because they get added after.

With my suggestion, if we can add approvers in automation rules as Actions, I can then order it so that it first adds the approver and then fires the comment, ensuring that they actually get tagged! This is why I made the suggestion, because the order of adding an approver to a RF doesn't happen at the same time as the other settings that kick in. Screenshot for context:

This is something I would also like to see. I have the approver set on the workflow status change but if the status is changed via automation the approval doesn't get set for some reason. It actually worked for a while, I created this flow in July and stopped working sometime here in November but this would give me the ability to fool proof it.

Thanks for your support Chris Hintz :)

I feel like most possible actions should be included in automation rules as we can control the order/timing of them, obviously with adding an approver being one of said actions!
