Import from Excel - custom fields

Is it possible to populate custom fields when importing from Excel?

If so do I just add the field title to the Excel sheet?

We just did this!  Here's how we did it:

1. Add the columns for Custom Fields at the very end of the .xls template after all obligatory columns.
  • (new column should be named same as the custom field created in Wrike)
2. Add the value for these columns next to Tasks, Folders, and Projects.

3. Import the .xls file and refresh the page after the import.

4. Open the imported Folder or Project and switch to the Table View.

5. Click Add column and use autosuggest (start typing the title of the Custom Field and pick the one you've added in the xls file). After that, all values for the Custom Fields you've added will be visible for the tasks.

Bonus Fact:
When you import a brand new Custom Field (that didn't exist before you imported a file), it's created as a text type fields. However, you can manually change the type of the field.

Does this work for updating the values of existing fields or just to create new fields that never existed?

Strangely some of the custom fields has value after importing while some custom fields are blank....I cannot figure out why it's behaving these way.....I shifted all the custom fields at the end of the excel per post but it's not working....

After populating the fields manually in Wrike itself, I tried downloading and importing exact the same file and amazingly the fields are again blank.....

We are migrating from other platform to Wrike and seems cannot get rid of the manual touch task by task....appreciate if anyone can help here!

Yes! The support team has helped me out. Basically my import file contains public custom fields which have the same name as the other 8 custom fields created by people outside my team. The import function now identifying by the field name and it got cross updated to other field under the same name. The walk around recommended here is to change the field name to a unique name when uploading like adding "..." for example, and it can be changed back after uploading is done. 🙂

Hello! I have done this but now have two custom fields with similar names. That way I don't have duplicative fields, how do I merge the fields?

Hi Roxanne Seltzer, as much as I would like to help, there is no way to merge Custom fields in Wrike. The best way to consolidate fields would be to copy-paste all the values into one field from the Table view as you would do in an Excel spreadsheet. It is possible to select several values at once to perform mass changes. Here is an article with more details on editing data in the Table view. Then you can delete the unnecessary field from Account Management.

If merging fields is something that could be useful for your team, I invite you to upvote this Community post and add your feedback there. Our Product team regularly reviews popular requests and takes them into consideration when developing future releases.

Let me know should you have any additional questions 😌
