Change fields in table view without deleting from custom list

The fields I had in a project got changed by someone who created fields in their template.  Only way to edit them I had to click the dropdown arrow in table view and edit the current field.  However that removed the custom fields they created in the create new field list.  How can you change the field in table view to existing custom field in the list without removing it?
