Workflow set as per task through API

Hi, 
My taskes in project have custom status(to do, in bearbeitung,completed) assigned from workflow. Now I need to change status of each task through API. At the moment I have discovered that projects cannot be assigned workflow through API so is this task possible now ,if yes how could I achieve it .
