[Status: Released 🚀] Sending comments with plain Enter, adding new lines with Shift+Enter

I keep getting extremely confused by the fact that in Wrike comments are sent by "Shift + Enter" and new line added by "Enter". This is completely opposite behavior than on most other sites / apps, be it Slack, Facebook, Skype, various online support widgets - I believe even Miranda back in the days of MSN had it like that by default.

It would by immensely helpful to have the possibility to set Wrike to send comments by Enter and add a new line by Shift + Enter.

Hey guys!
We have great news! We added a new keyboard shortcut option for sending comments in Wrike.

Now you can change how you send comments. Just go to your Profile Settings to make the change. There are two options for how to send comments: 1) press Ctrl/CMD+Enter or 2) just press Enter. Please note that now Shift+Enter will always add a line break instead of sending the comment and this is true for both the Task Stream and Wrike Proof.

Agreed on Adam on this - it's a completely opposite behaviour than most sites. An option to toggle this would be useful. Thanks Adam for the suggestion and Anna for following through.

I absolutely agree. Default for majority of programs is that Enter = submit, Shift+Enter = new line. I keep on submitting comments accidentally in Wrike because of this and there's no option to change the behaviour.

Forwarded here by support after submitting the same request. Agree that the current setup is not intuitive.

I agree as well! This confusion is double, in my experience, because it's the opposite when leaving a comment on a file in Review. When leaving a comment in a Review, you simply hit enter to post the comment, and Shift+Enter makes a new line. At the very least, it should be consistent within Wrike how to post a comment and how to create a new line.

I also agree!

Do include a toggle option because one shoe does not fit all.

Thanks

Agree with this request. It is very confusing to have Shift + Enter to submit unlike most of  other platforms we use dailly and especially because in some cases we can't undo the submission on Wrike.
Suggestion: use "send" button to submit and the shortcut could be the Enter on the NUM pad.

@Anna G any update on this request? thank you.

@Anna G I think there should be at least a preference option for this. People like me would need to think more than one minute before pressing keys in Wrike because of this confusion.

How do I create a task for Wrike to update this in Wrike?
Or would it be a project with multiple tasks?

Hard return / return
Soft return / shift+return

Just practicing for when the task is complete.
Or will it be a project?

Cheers

Hi guys, we've brought this to the attention of the Product Team. They're interested in this, however, reviewing this functionality is not on their roadmap so I have no timeframe to share. As usual, once I have more concrete info, I'll post it here.

Thanks for the input 🙌

Thanks for replying. I really believe this should be a priority. It is super confusing, specially because when adding a comment to a file it works the other way around. SHIFT + ENTER makes a line break and simple ENTER posts the comment.
I don't understand why posting a comment on a task has to challenge the paradigm. SHIFT+ENTER is for a line break.

Yes, I agree. So many times that I'm sending something to someone without having finished writing the text just because I wanted to make a paragraph. It doesn't make sense this app is doing it differently than all the other working management apps out there.

Yes agree this is a pain.  It should be a toggle where the user can set their preferences.

This is a minor change, I can't believe this wouldn't take a half decent developer about 2 hours to fix.

Really need this changed. Every other program i use is the opposite. I can't tell you how many times i have to redo what i did because of this.

For me this is the biggest Wrike's UI mistake and should be fixed asap, I agree with others, it is extremely annoying and confusing behavior!

Hey guys! I submitted a support request today about this and they pointed me here, so I'll just copy-paste what I wrote in the email:

The problem is with the Shift+Enter shortcut when writing comments to a ticket. You see, in most applications, this key combination serves for entering a line break, because Enter by itself submits the text/comment/whatever. But in Wrike, this logic is inverted, causing many headaches - basically 50% of the time I submit the comment instead of entering a line break.

If the aforementioned behavior would be configurable, that would be awesome! I tried to find a setting for this, but to no avail.

This is really, really, annoying to the point I can't be in a meeting and use Wrike and take (real-time) notes on my tasks. I have to use Word and then copy the comments over later. If not, during the meeting, I'll click Shift+Enter instinctively to go to the next line and it submits my comment. At that point I either:

  1. ...hit edit and continue typing during the meeting. (NOTE) If I go too long, then it times out and won't save the edits to my notes. Making me look like I errored with some half-baked ideas. I then need to copy and paste all my notes into another comment and hit save? Ugh.
  2.  ...copy the notes from the first comment, select the three dots, click "delete", Are you sure you want to delete this comment? click "Delete" again. Click on the "Add Comment" section, hurry and paste the previous start to my notes add the thoughts I've been retaining in my mind through this whole process and then realize that while I was doing all that I missed the most important part of the meeting. Once that happens, slowly close my laptop and pull out a chisel and a rock to securely carve it in stone. :(

Please fix this irritating feature. Thank you so much.

Hi Wrike - I do think that this should be reconsidered and made a high priority. A soft return (shift-return) always adds a line/paragraph on all other web applications (facebook, twitter, any comments field on any site). Case in point, even in this comments field in your Help Portal, shift-return creates a new line, it does not "submit" this post.

But when using Wrike, it submits your comment. We (this is the case for everyone in our office) have to switch mental gears each time, and I make the mistake still - this has caused some bad communication issues when replying to clients, as they will get notification of something that has posted, meanwhile I'm frantically returning to edit the comment that was mid-thought. Worse, it will happen on the same comment because I think that what was right was wrong and I do the opposite and end up being wrong again and have to edit it yet again, or worse, delete it and start all over again confusing the client further :-(.

I know our clients have the same problem because they'll submit 5 comments in a row creating a new comment entry each time, thinking they are just adding a paragraph return.

The UX on this really does need to be changed, it's completely non-standard. Sorry to the team member that thinks that is not the case... but this impacts users CONSTANTLY while using Wrike - many many many times a day, and the lost time and annoyance adds up into something that seems minor but is far from it.

Please consider this as a fundamental bug in the app!

The hilarious part of this whole thing is that even within the app it is not consistent. For example: shift-enter submits a comment in the main part of the app - but shift-enter gives you a new line when using the media commenting part of the app.

👍 Spot On 💡 Innovative Approach 💪 Stellar Advice ✅ Solved 🪄 Remove Kudos

Yes PLEASE!  Every other browser-based solution I use either has the reverse functionality (where shift-enter will do a carriage return and enter will post), or at least give the user the option to choose which functionality. The latter would be my recommendation. Thank you!

👍 Spot On 💡 Innovative Approach 💪 Stellar Advice ✅ Solved 🪄 Remove Kudos

I completely agree with the other posters. Shift+Enter is a new line. It is not Submit.

I have sent several unfinished notes because of this behavior.

Otherwise the app has been great!

Toggle for hitting <enter> to send would be most optimal.

3
👍 Spot On 💡 Innovative Approach 💪 Stellar Advice ✅ Solved 🪄 Remove Kudos

Please change this.
It is completely unintuitive and makes me not want to use the commenting system. That's how annoying it is to have to edit or delete my accidental sent comments all the time.

2
👍 Spot On 💡 Innovative Approach 💪 Stellar Advice ✅ Solved 🪄 Remove Kudos

Totally unintuitive. Creates unnecessary conflict between Wrike and literally every other application with this type of reply interface, including other parts of Wrike.

Consider how many small interruptions this needlessly introduces to everyone's workflow. It's an unwelcome surprise to new users, a constant irritation for existing users and really really bad UX design generally.

Don't treat this as a feature request - it's broken! Please fix.

Good to know that you have time to create a Halloween 🎃 theme for your app. What about finding time on your roadmap to fix this unintuitive way of using SHIFT + ENTER? 🤔

(Just figured that SHIFT + ENTER doesn't submit my comment 🤣😂 Coherence is not a concern right?)

Dear Wrike,

I think you should really ignore all these requests. You are focused on a great mission and shouldn't care about the experience of the users. They just don't understand. This is your product and you know what's better for us for sure.
Besides that, this update looks like 29th century - I'm not sure if there is an engineer or technology in the entire world which is able to fix that. Too difficult.

But wait. May I just pay you 20 bucks so you hire a freelancer to spend an hour to fix that? Don't tell me that you product is designed i a way that improvement of such a simple feature may crash any other part of the product.

I feel real good now when all the poison came out of me.

Sincerely yours,
Vladimir
