Not display subtasks in dashboard

There exists a Dashboard with two widgets.. one that displays all tasks of status Submitted and another that displays all tasks of status In Progress. Both of these widgets filter tasks from the same folder. A new task created in that folder defaults to the status Submitted.

A developer moves a task from the submitted widget to the in progress widget, which changes the status to In Progress, as expected. Now the developer decides they want to plan subtasks to help them breakdown their work for the parent task that's in progress.

Problem:

As they add subtasks the status they're created with is the default Submitted status. This makes them all appear in the submitted widget.... but we don't want them to. They should stay isolated to the parent task. Changing them individually is tedious and seems like it should be unnecessary. Batch changes from a list view are also not desirable as we would like to work mainly from the dashboard. Using custom fields to identify a subtask from a parent task is cumbersome and also not desirable.

The subtasks basically have nothing to do with the workflow the dashboard is meant to facilitate and simply should not be there.

Question:

How should I make this happen? Possible solutions that I can't figure out how to do are:

- have subtasks created with a different default status
- have subtasks created with a different default workflow
- somehow have the widget only display parent tasks and not subtasks

I'm open to other ways to handle this. Thanks for the feedback!

Dear Matthew

It seems you want to keep subtasks hidden from the dashboard.

I don't know how to do that with Dashboards, but Board View does exactly what you want.

In Board View subtasks are not visible unless you open the parent task.

Hope this helps

Regards

You're correct... that is what I'd like to do. I find the Board view too linear for our workflow. Our tasks sometimes jump a number of status' (forward and backwards) so our dashboards are set up like a grid, instead of a left to right flow. Basically if I had that functionality on the board, but with the flexibility of widgets on the dashboard, I'd be set!!

Hi Matthew, such a fantastic post 👍. You've covered some workaround that we would have suggested. I can help with some feature request threads though. Take a look at the two below, I think they might be interesting for you (and potentially good ones to upvote):

  1. Lee's post requests that subtasks have a different default status than their parent task.
  2. Dave's request is for having only parent tasks on Dashboards (no subtasks).

I just discovered, via another post in The Community, (scroll down to Ben Lee's post) that if the subtask has the actual FOLDER assigned to it, then it will show in the board.  To explain better: When a task is in a folder, the folder's name is bright and bold. Now look at the subtasks; because they are subtasks they inherit their location, but they don't inherit the bright and bold folder name, it's faded out. I just added my subtasks to the folder and they now show on the Board AND can be dragged to adjust status.
