[Status: Backburner ⏳] Organizing Custom Fields

I have an issue that I wanted to add here to see if anyone else has the same experience.  My organization has created many custom fields that are associated with different folders.  We tag projects with these different folders based on the projects attributes, which causes the custom fields to become available for that particular project.  There doesnt seem to be any way to organize the order of the custom fields or to group them in the list view.  It would be great if we had the ability to add section headers or line separators in the custom field area in list view.  Am I the only one who has a need for this?

This should be on the FRONT burner, not the back.
We want to add users that will predominantly update custom fields from their phone ap - the sorting is a mess to say the least.

Please help.

This is how i see what needs to be done:

  • Sorting - no comment necesarry
  • Grouping - this should be done on "attribute" level not folder level to make it simpler, maybe named "Attribute Category". On Task/Tag itself this could be visible as a seperate collapsable region. Collapsable functionality would GREATLY help us. When implementing attribute categories they should also be sortable the same as attributes themselves (a unified sorting UI for both).
  • Option to show attributes on main menu - a special "MainBar" grouping/category, Attributes in this category should be always visible at the top right after system fields to make them first class citizens (without the need for expanding attributes).

I agree with all the users asking for the capability to, at the very least, rearrange the custom fields as we see fit.  Better would be to allow us to group and organize associated custom fields together (tabs or sections with break lines).

Haven't read each post, so forgive me if this has already been mentioned. This seems so simple to me. This is all about customizing data structures in ways that are meaningful to the user.

So many system functions hinge on custom fields. Analyze reports/widgets (which are fed to leadership) and automations, to name just two that stand out to me. The less meaningful the ways the CFs are ordered, it should be expected the lower quality data input you get. The lower the quality of input means the functions that depend on that input become less reliable/consistent. In our case, that means the reports we provide leadership are that much less trustworthy. Or the automations we have setup are that much less consistent.

Meaningful structure --> better data inputs --> better system performance --> higher value to business

I strongly agree with those saying that this is an important feature, and I have upvoted the OP. In our situation, the alphabetical listing of custom fields in the UI separates items that should go together in our end users' minds. Our team even suggested renaming custom fields names to start with letters or numbers as index characters to get them to display in the correct order. Example: aRegion, aBusiness Unit, aBrand, bExecutive Priority, cEpic, cSize, cCommitted This Sprint, etc. That might work for an SMB, but it doesn't scale. We have so many different types of folders/flows for different teams (we're a global multinational) that it would be a nightmare to try to line it all up.

Like Mike pointed out above, meaningful structure is directly related to adoption & data completeness. Those things directly impact business value. Fingers crossed that this one is addressed in a future release!

Tim Striplin Welcome to the Community 👋 Huge thanks for providing your feedback here!

Our team has recently released Custom item types. They are fully customizable task- and project-based item types that can be tailored to the needs of your whole organization or specific departments and teams.

When creating custom item types, it's possible to show or hide custom fields, as well as change their order 👍
